I don't know other than I have read a number of people on here talking about their 10+ year old phones still sounding as good or even better than when they first got them.

Many of us have headphones that are 30+ years old and still work as good as new. Good quality headphones don't just "crap out," although soft parts like earpads periodically need to be replaced.

My HD-580's sat in a file cabinet in a garage for 10 years...I thought they had been eaten by the void, but when I found them in that drawer, they still sounded mighty fine.

I haven't noticed significant degradation on 25+ year old cans.

And some things do take awhile to break in. I had to recap it, but my 1946 Hammarlund HQ-129X is finally starting to "open up." Shame the original owner isn't around to hear it.

Stax certainly last forever. Mine is 20 years old and going strong.

So how do they sound compared to new phones? I mean I would assume the materials used to make them and maybe even the technology used in them are different 30, 20, even 10 years ago?

Someone I know has a headphone that was made before the invention of the microphone. It consists of two small funnels with a head strap (it goes over the top of one's head) in between each funnel. To use these, one inserts the smaller end of the funnels into each ear. It's truly amazing how realistic these headphones sound but they are much too old.

Older than 30 years, the original 2000-ohm hd414 is still good - if you have an amp that can drive it.
