How much does a line out matter on an iPod?

Compared to Headphone out, no contest. If you're buying an outboard Amp, you want to send it a clean, line out signal, not one that goes through the internal ipod amp - less stuff in the chain That being said, the line out quality itself doesn't really matter, they all do a good job IMO. Spend more money on headphones, not cables.

Quite noticeable difference imo.
Definitely go line-out when using an external amplifier.

I've done some informal blind testing (stand behind people's backs) using the HP out of a 5.5Gen iMod (with a high quality mini-to-mini, iPod vol at max) vs the iMod Line Out (right off the Wolfson DAC via the ALO cable), into an iQube, with ES7's.

Nearly everybody hears a difference and gets it right blind. Not scientific, maybe I tipped them, but I'm convinced, since I hear the difference myself.

It sounds slightly clearer and the bass might be slighter tighter, but nothing light and day in my opinion.
