Whilst i've been installing my new motherboard I've also been testing out various bits of my audio gear with my ETYs... and have come to a shocking conclusion...

My current favourite line up for headphone out...

3. D-EJ1000
2. D-E905
1. D777

Quite scarily, whilst the E905 is technically the most accurate, the D777 injects just that little bit extra life into music, we're not talking huge amounts here, and this is STRICTLY for ETYs (the 4P in any case) - but its enough to get your foot tapping just that little bit more...

and the line outs...

3. D777
2. D-E905
1. D-EJ1000

The EJ1000 just seems that much more accurate to me, and the aeons of battery life you get are an added bonus of course

Maybe Purk, you could add to this?!

Thanks

Well, I found out that the batteries that came with my 900 are bad. They won't take a charge. I tried my batteries from my 777 and they will charge in the 900 but the CD player got really hot. I think I may have to send it all back for a replacement. I did listen to the 900 for a little time and in a quick comparison with the 777 I thought the 900 is a little bit more spitty on top. Right now I think the 777 sounds better.

What kind of volume was you running at Acid? - there is a cross over point on the most part, where the D-E905 sounds good at quieter volumes, and the D777 at higher...

But, as I previously mentioned, the ETYs seem to tame the D777, make it sound better... maybe the worm is turning... who knows...

Duncan & Acid,
I think it boils down to.....which sound characteristics do you prefered. To me, both are excellent discmans. They are way better than the newer generation discmans (i.e. ej01, ej925, and ej915).<----Headphone out.
If you prefer *fun*, D-777 will definitely be the one to go with. D-777 delivers very powerful sound (very tight bass, good midrange, and slightly less high). The soundstage appears closed and much narrower than the 900. Sometimes the midbass can be a bit over done here.
If you prefer *accurate* with sense of air, D-900 is definitely your discman (a bit medicore in bass, excellent midrange, excellent high) The soundstage is also much wider. Lately, I actually prefer the D-900 over my D-777.
Others 2 discmans worth mentioning are D-303, and D-515. D-303 share many aspects of d-777's. However, everything that the D-777 is capable of...the D-303 can do it better (very deep bass extension with a bit of midbass boost, warm sounding, very sweet midrange, and good high). The soundstage is also wider, but not as wide as the D-900.
The 515 is also an excellent discman. It sounds very similar to the D-303 (lots of sub-bass, no midbass at all, sweet midrange, and good high). It I ever ranked my Discman according to my preference it would go like this:

Headphone out:
D-303 > D-515 = D-905 > D-777

Line out:
D-515 > D-303 >> D-E905 >> D-777
I just like the D-515 than the D-303, b/c it allows user to adjust bassboost/DSS while the line out is being operative. Otherwise, thier line out is equally impressive. D-515 and D-303 line out is significant better than the D-E905. Meaning, better bass extension, much wider soundstage, and very nice clarity. The midrange b/w the top 3 players are equally impressive. The 905 is a bit congess when compares to the 515, and 303.

However, these results is based on my judgement only. Some people might find these results to be different. I used Senn HD-580 + creek obh-11 to test the line out. I used Sony MDR-E484 and Grado SR-225 to test the headphone out. I hope this help.

I didn't include the D-555 in this list, since my friend still have it. I'll have it back shortly though.

D-777 sounds much better on my E-484 compares to the bigger headphone.

Thanks for making me want a D303 all the more Purk

nice concise round up there

BUT, I think you'll have to retry it when you get your 4Ps... and see if you still think the same... to me, the E905 upon extended listening is a shade too polite, with the D777 just having a little bit more energy...

It would be interesting to see what you thought as and when that time comes

The only fundamental difference I can see between the two players is... what they're called:

E900

E905

(sorry for the small pictures)

Apparently the E900 is called a 'CD Walkman' and the E905 is a 'Discman ESP2' So, I guess the difference in model numbers could reflect a different part number for the lids and what is printed on them?!?!

The underside can do, yes ~ I don't take too much notice though because my MZR-M55 MDP gets hotter

Ok, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem with the 900. Funny thing, the batteries didn't want to charge the first few times I tried then all of a sudden they are now taking a charge...weird.

Yup, that can sometimes happen when the batteries are totally flat ~ funny thing is, that I have a set of NH-9WM batteries that won't charge at all anymore... yet the last time they were charged they worked perfectly, all I did was to not charge them up for a couple of months

Duncan and Acid,
Both player can get hot while charging the NI-MHs. However, I was fortunated to buy a 15 minutes separated charger. That should prolong the life of the curcuit on both players.

Duncan,
Nice works on "CD walkman" on the D-E900.

Acid,
Do u like the D-E900 better now? Please, tell me your impression on both players (D-777 and D-E900). I just wondering if our findings are the same or not.

Purk
