how many phones do we really need?
Apr 17, 2009 at 2:26 PM Post #76 of 91
Necessarity:
  1. Hi-Fi can for home (HD650 now)
  2. Nice IEM for travel or isolation at home (ER-4S)
  3. Earbud for laying or sitting at home or somewhere else (PK1)
  4. Clip-ons (supraaural, behind-the-neck) for walks or activity (G2A)
More are excess to me

No, because this leads me to the L3000 (if I can find one).

What I don't understand most in this crazy multiple headphone thing, even more than multiple earbuds, is a dedicated pair of gaming headphones. lolwut?

the real question is, 'does one really own headphones on head-fi?' it's more like a universal continuum of audiophile material. if i am curious about a headphone, it isn't so hard to sell and trade your way to getting them. in this case the term 'all your headphone are belong to us' makes all the more sense and it means that i truly have every headphone i could ever want for any situation.

One enjoys representation from what different technological foundations have to offer.

Electrostatic: Stax SR-007
Piezoelectric: TakeT H2
Orthodynamic: Orthodome #4
Heil AMT: AMT #1
Moving-Coil: AKG K1000
Surround Sound: Sennheiser Surrounder Pro

That's why the prospect of these upcoming Ribbon headphones has me excited. And after I've finished with the AMT design I want to build a magnetostriction headphone.

Moving-Coil = Dynamic. Dynamic is a clumsy word to use in a technologically specific context. Sennheisers new driver is a moving-coil too, whatever shape it is. The Surrounder uses dynamic drivers too.

I do, sort of. Theres info in the ortho thread on the Orthodome #1

Is need the criteria? I probably don't need more than one set but I like having more.
I have 4 sets of closed headphones, two open pair for portable use, and more IEMs and buds than I care to count ATM.
Same thing with guns. Some is good, more is better.

If I had the money, I'd have a huge collection ...

But since I don't have the money.

I find that having two really good set of cans around (ideally, one open and one very much isolated/closed) is going to make me the most happy in the long run.

For now, I have Grado GS1000's and Grado RS1's ... but I'm seriously considering offloading one of them for a good set of closed cans/IEMS ...

For me, one electrostat (he60), and one moving coil (hd600 to be replaced with the hd800).

Mayhaps I'll add some Koss 950 to the mix, but, perhaps, the more relevant question is how many amps do you need.

I have 4 currently, with 2 more coming online shortly.

Ten pair not including IEM's....and still lookin'

- IEM for discreet public use
- Portable mid size pair (for me the sr60, most likely upgrading soon)
- circumaural for home listening
- cheap buds/iem for throwing around/laying around if needing something to listen to
So at least 4 I'd say, maybe 5-6 if you like to have a setup at work or in another room, though I'm assuming most headfiers go beyond even that.

-nice pair of IEMs for traveling
-your random, walkin around every day headphones
-a pair of whatever you enjoy sitting around with at home
-maybe another pair or two if you like the variety and your wallet doesn't scream too loudly when you get upgradtitus.

3-4 sounds good to me
