I know things like earpads, headbands and sometimes cords will need to be replaced as normal wear items.

But I really want to know is the life of the drivers before the sound starts to deteriorate?

Thanks

A very long time. I have headphones that are older than many head-fi regulars.

Just to nitpick, did you have them both 22 and 30 years ago?

But a related question I have, is, how long will IEM's last? Considering of course that the cables are treated gently and all recommended maintenance (changing filters, etc.) is done...

As long as you don't abuse them much, they should last a very long time. I've got earbuds (Kenwood) from about '82 and a headphone (Sony) from '88 and a Beyer from '91 that are still working perfectly.

So you definitely get your money's worth out of headphones.

My Sansui S-22 are 35 years old this year and they work flawlessly, the headband is a little deteriorated.

Had my Sennheiser HD280's for about 4 years now. Still work flawlessly, only ... well the build quality of the H280's was craptastic aside from the drivers.

if you take good care of them, they might last longer than you do!
