How good is the ns500v's "good sacd performance"?

Yeah its the highs that kill this player, but there is something enjoyable about the sound in the midrange somewhere.

I doubt it. If you go through the audio settings and set them properly, you get pretty good redbook performance for a player that sold for about $160 at the time. If you were expecting it to outperform a $1000 dedicated redbook player, I don't think anyone claimed that it did.
