Getting into speakers and have a questions regarding the best way to connect a Sub, which on my buy list.

I have Ascend Acoustics 340se for L/R.

Source is:
Sony dvp-s7000 for CD transport > Coax
Highly modified Zhoulo 2.5 Dac > 6 Channel Direct L/R connection
Harmon Kardon AVR 500

Using 6 Channel Direct connection, allows me to use the Harmon receiver as an amp from the external Dac.
However, this does not allow me to configure the speakers to filter low frequency (small/large).

I believe my options are the following:
1. Buy Sub with High Frequency Bypass and route the speaker wires from the receiver to the sub and then to the main L/R speakers
2. See if the Low Frequency output from the receiver will work but I am not sure since im connecting via 6 Channel Direct.
3. Buy/Build external crossover

My question is what is the best way to connect a sub with minimal impact.
Im thinking of getting Hsu or used Onix-x sub.
