Just noticed there's no recent thread dedicated to DIY headphones! There are many threads dedicated to some, but not a main one for many to interact with a of recent.
To get start, I specialise in CAD work for some companies but there are times I am let loose to make my own personal projects!

My current main project is going to feature a 50mm biodyna that will be modified to and printed with various materials. I want it to look as premium as possible with my skill set, while not absolutely destroying myself financially.

This one was an old project, using hd800 speakers from audio sanctuary. Its printed in carbon fibre infused pla and an off the shelf headband. A bit janky, thou it worked! Barely...

A completely 3d printed headphone inspired by a lot of retro themes, however not completely retro!

I'd really love some kind of guide akin to Rary's earbud guide for common materials/techniques used to tune headphones.

Surprisingly in concept headphones are just as simple as earbuds with a few more factors to apply, but in terms of actually tuning a headphone is a whole other can of worms. Im considering making a guide myself actually soon on this! Just like I said, its a whole different world.

Expect a lot of work for me to do haha

I've been looking for days for mono (TS) 2.5mm jacks to no avail.
The closest I've come to are these:

if anyone else is interested.
Annoyingly I have a pair that came with a DIY kit but the seller won't let me buy them separately.

I've been doing a bit of DIY with my HD-R9, and while doing research, came across this thread at another forum. Way above my skill set, but fun to read through: https://forum.headphones.com/t/diy-headphone-adventure/16962

Some interesting ideas in there for damping, though I've never liked using paper towels. I've always used different thicknesses of felt.

Edit: Oops, misspelled HE-R9.

Super interesting and very impressive headphones! The woodworking really elevates his builds and wouldn't look out of place next to some ZMFs or Audezes.

I wonder where he got those ADX5000 drivers from, a quick search on google only turns up the full headphone.

Contact AT themselves! They should be able/willing to sell you a pair according to a personal source.

Hey, I simply emailed the support that I wanted to buy a pair of replacement drivers.
The pair cost about 350€

I should update the thread with newer measurements of the Headphones and some newer stuff I made

Thanks!

Oof, that's a bit much for me right now haha, I'm just dipping my toes into full-size headphone design.

For starting out I think the Peerless HPD50N is a great way to go. Its used by plenty people, is fairly cheap and easy to work with.
Absolutely this! 40mm and 50mm are both great contenders. While the 50mm is generally preferred by more, I like the 40mm for its compact size and ease of use.

Eg. of a proto

For sure! I've got a pair of 40mm for a compact set I'm designing.

Finally assembled the set I've been working on:

I limited myself to what I already had on hand in terms of hardware, which was basically this kit, a pair of Peerless 40mm drivers, and various earpads; all of which I ordered last year to mess around with DIY. I picked up some felt and wool for tuning but otherwise the only new things are the housings that I designed and 3D printed. I ended up with a pair of Grado foam earpads as they fit the whole 'compact and portable' ethos of the set the best of what I had available.

Sound-wise, these are pretty bright and a tad shouty without any tuning applied. I then taped over the baffle ports, stuffed the earcups with felt and wool, and put felt in front of the drivers. Still bright, but the treble peaks have been smoothed out a little without much loss of detail, which has brought the bass up in comparison. Speaking of bass, it's fairly punchy, but obviously doesn't thump or rumble. This set works better with rock music than EDM.

I did try some leather/velour hybrid pads with these and they made them sound much more v-shaped and fun, but were ridiculously oversized for the set (10mm wider and twice as thick as the foam ones) so I've ordered some lower profile ones to try out. I might also print out some deeper cups to let the drivers breathe a little more.
