Holo Audio May DAC Speculation

Strong statement
To clarify, it was sound preference. I just knew. DAVE is still going to be fantastic for a lot of people. For the price, May gives you sooo much of what DAVE does, but with a presentation of music I much prefer.

Got DHL tracking Tuesday and it's already in my state! Delivery was estimated for Monday, but it looks like it may be coming early. Yay!

Hello everyone. For about three years now, I have had a LKS 004 which has given me a lot of satisfaction, but lately I am thinking about upgrading to a May 3 Kitsune, with the desire to find a little more density, sweetness or darker background. Do you think it is the right path...? And another thing, please, I have always played my files by upsampling to dsd512 via software. With May, do you recommend doing upsampling or simply playing the files as they are, without doing any type of upsampling...? Thanks for any opinion. All the best.....

Upsampling to dsd512 in software (HQPlayer is the best way) and running the May in NOS mode is the way to go.

I second @jcn3 and recommend that you use upsampling to DSD512. If you're using HQPlayer and then yeah it will sound amazing that way on the May.

How do you actually upsample to dsd512 on HQP?

In version 5 (and similarly in version 4) you set the output to "SDM" and select 44.1x512 or 48x512. And make sure to set the modulator and noise shaper according to how powerful your PC is. 512 barely works on the Mac (which I think is at least an option with HQPlayer because of DirectDSD) but on Windows it depends on using ASIO and the appropriate drivers.

Any of you who have this r2r May dac come from having had a dac with the saber chip (LKS 004 dac), in my current case double chip 9038, and can you make a comment about the difference in sound....? I'm looking for information before I start buying the May dac. Thanks for any opinion...

Listened to May on 2 occasions and didn’t like it. Will try again when I get another chance. Didn’t sound all that musical to me - still digital/“hifi” sounding.

Still enamored by the Holo May some months later. Love the sound it provides and it’s price/performance as Koji points out is outstanding.
