HIFIMAN SuperMini Impressions Thread

Sep 6, 2016 at 10:01 PM Post #106 of 235
Just got my Supermini.  I tried my Oppo PM-3 with a balanced cable and the Supermini has enough power to blow my ears out.  Comfortable volume was 13 for my test playlist.  Next I tried the HE-500 (also with balanced cable).  To get the same volume, I had to crank it up to 20.  This thing is powerful!

What is the max volume number?

Is the screen always on, can you turn it off, or does it turn off after a timeout?

Volume goes to 32. There is 8GB of internal storage, but it would not play any music hat I put there. The screen does timeout.

Tried the Supermini today with the FitEar 334 with a Moon Audio Silver Dragon balanced cable. Depending on the track, I needed the volume between 1 and 3. Sensitive IEMs are going to be overwhelmed unless they add a gain setting of some sort. Sounds very good, but way too much gain.

Was there any hiss? I'm assuming if there would be hiss with the TG334 then the Andromeda/ EE Zeus would hiss too.

I didn't notice any hiss. When I get home tomorrow, I will try with my Zeus R. The only combo where I was notherd by hiss was Zeus R with QPR1.

Looks like the newer MegaMini has significantly lower output.  54mW vs 329mW on the MegaMini, that and a lower battery life.  Anyone other differences?

Less battery life probably due to the full color lcd screen. Supermini has a monochrome oled screen and all metal body.

No balanced output, that's a deal breaker for me only because most of my iem cables are already 2.5mm terminated.

Balanced out on the Supermini is 3.5mm with Hifiman pinout (which is different from AK's 2.5mm balanced pinout).

Don't understand Hifiman's crowd-funding for the Megamini. Afaik, this wasn't done for the Supermini.

The Mega's $250 msrp is more reasonable (compared to the Mini's $400) but is still a bit overpriced. With daps like the AK Jr. down to $299, the Megamini may be a difficult sell. The Jr. still has some software quirks but the sound quality is amazing. Couple that with the lcd touchscreen, metal construction, bluetooth, higher power output (1.95V vs 1.4V), it's (sometimes working) usb dac function, and only 10mm longer and wider. Mini has the longer battery life spec however.

You have to read this

So, Fang Bian says, we have to sacrifice gapless for the best SQ? Is he kidding or what? Total dealbreaker for me!
