You can go digital or analogue. It utilizes the dacs of the 901.

It's not a preamp, just a dock station to hook up 901 with PC (USB) and/or preamp/amp (RCA) so to utilize 901 as a DAC and/or music player. It doesn't have volume control built in.

Not silly at all. Understanable. the dock allows for many easy features to be used while accessing the two very fine Sabre dacs in the 901. It also keeps the 901 charged while being used. A very solid piece of equipment, in appearance, feel and use. IMO.

i use my CIEMs all the time,, seems to me a very expensive way just to play music from my laptop through the 901

It would be a shame. Since I got Tidal I haven't touch the HM901. It's just that the files in Tidal are so much better and with better dynamic range than most of my cdrips in flac. The problem it's than most cds have some extra dynamic compression (some a lot) while Tidal doesn't have it, so the dynamics are closer to vinyl. It's amazing! Zero fatige. Well, it seems that my old Pico it's back in the game.

Yes of course it's possible!
Just connect with the Dock-1 and you will be just fine ...
