HIFIdiy's mini USB DAC MK2--Also a headphone amp!

Hi Starky, how about compared to the 0404?

I only own the PCI 0404, so can't comment on the strengths of the USB version. However, my experience with the PCI 0404 in comparing it with the Zero, the hifidiy and a couple of other DACs is that it lacks refinement. The component parts of good sound are all there, and well balanced, but everything is a bit rough. Very forward, with grainy treble and aggressive bass. Some may like this - I don't, and much prefer the more neutral, relatively relaxed sound of the hifidiy unit.

I should add that the headphone amp section of the hifidiy DAC is IMO its best asset. Don't get me wrong, the DAC section is very good, but the amp section is truly spectacular.

Also, it is worth noting that I prefer the USB input of the DAC to the SPDIF input. I don't know why, but the SPDIF input seems to lose a little of the definition and impact that the USB mode has. Only a little, but I do notice it.

Hi.
Anyone out there who knows wether this DAC/Amp need a driver to work with a computer, and if so are there a Linux version out there?

According to Starky:

Aside from the aforementioned LED niggle, I have found this DAC to be absolutely superb. I don't have my Zero anymore to compare, but if memory serves me correctly the hifidiy unit is in a completely different league. Highly recommended!

Hi,guys, surprised to see the MUD being discussed here. I'm a user from China.
It has a fixed output in the back.

Eugene, do you have any experience with this unit? I'm looking for a cheap solution for my work PC, and this seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

All right, let me just simply talk about what I feel on this unit. I don't have many listening experience of expensive HIFI devices, so my ears are not so sensitive. The first impression of the MUD driving my PX100 is not surprising, I just felt the dynamic improved, but too much bass of PX100 is not controlled. A months ago I bought my HD600, then the difference between the MUD and my portable CD player is becoming obvious. The sound field, detail, density are OK, the frequency is balanced. Transparence and definition are good. The power of the amp part is quite enough. In a word, it's well worth its price. Don't know what your phones are, Grados driven by it are a bit too intense for me and driving low impedance headphones is not its advantage. I'm quite satisfied with the performance of HD600 on it though.I think it's a good choice for you, you may try.
Not good at and not used to say something in English, hope you can understand what I say.

Excelent review and your English is fine. We really respect our Head-Fi cultural differences. Did you say that this is best with High Impedence cans such as the HD650's and Beyer's ? I've been using strictly Tube/SS hybrids with my low impdence cans and I was wondering how this amp may sound. (Denons,Fostex ) and low impedence IEM's

Nice review, thanks. And I hope someday I'm able to speak a foreign language half as good as you.

I've only got an MX360 and a PX100 and the improvement is limited. It can drive any phones ,better at high impedence phones. I think Denons will perform good on it, for the phones themselves are good. The amp part consults the Graham Slee SOLO, maybe 60% of a regular SOLO, not very sure.
