quick question: will it be safe to get an used RS2, or am I better off buying a new one to avoid finding issues (like for instance getting one with a messed up battery for instance)?
Buying used is always a crap shoot. However, I think buying from the classifieds here is better than eBay, Craigslist, etc. Most people here take good care of their equipment since they buy and sell often. I bought my RS2 from the classifieds from a guy who claimed he only charged it 5 times and I believe it. It looked practically new, and was likely not broken in. It had the original box and everything that is supposed to come with it. I paid $250. Good luck in your search. It’s a great little DAP.

I had to have the battery replaced after 3/4 years. Can't speak for others, haven't heard of any similar problems.
Might have been less than that as I think it only came out about 2 years ago, so that is not good, hopefully we won't hear of more battery issues

How much did it cost you?

@carrots99, The battery is usually the weakest element on portable thingies. There is no easy way to find how many hours a RS2 has been used on battery and how many charge cycles it went through.
I think if you can get a used RS2 for less than [new] - [bat. replacement cost], it may not be a bad deal…

But from what I’ve seen, used RS2 tend to be pricey!
My local dealer handled everything under warranty.

Anyone have issues with this device crashing? I have a substantial library but know that the limit is 50k tracks after update 1.06 (I am on v1.3). To test, I tried scanning to update the database for 40,000 songs. Unfortunately, whenever it hits that number and tried to update itself with the new database, it has a high chance of crashing and restarting itself. Testing with other sizes (20,000-35,000), the crash is very random. One time, I was able to successfully scan 40,000 songs but when I went to test further, it continued to crash when attempting to update it's database, forcing me to stop the scan earlier so I at least had something in my library.

The only semi-reliable method is to not scan and only do a file search on individual microSD cards which while it's nice to be able to use it...is not ideal for random plays and discovery.

It is also odd that this thing can hold two microSD slots up to 2TB each but only has the capacity to index maximum of 50,000 if you're lucky and it doesn't crash.

Anyone know of a workaround or troubleshooting for this issue?

I think 50,000 is the hardware limitation of a minimalistic player. As a result, after 20,000 I stopped using library scanning and opened it by folders and playlists. If you use long folder names and large nesting, this makes the situation worse.

I sorted my albums by artist within my file structure. It is a bit tedious going through it. Slight workaround is you can select all the albums from an artist and add place it into a playlist. You unfortunately cannot do this via artist though.

There are sadly not many DAPs out there that can hold large libraries of lossless audio files. The only other one I'm aware of was the original Fiio M11 but the second MicroSD slot was removed in subsequent iterations because of reading speeds. Everything has been moving towards streaming which is not something I want for an offline audio player.

Trying to find a niche within a niche is a huge hurdle. I wish more DAPs moved towards larger storage capacity.

Android players don't have a library size limitation. It's just the non-Android players, most of which use the X1000 or X2000 SoC, have very limited resources, like DRAM size. I believe this is why the Cayin N3 Ultra is using an older, stable version of Android (8.1), on an old Snapdragon processor, closed and stripped down to only play music with the built in player. Because it's Android based, and using the mature Hiby Music player, there is no library limitation and there's more than enough CPU to handle it.

Can I have an android player which supports two 2TB microSDs? From the current market, slim pickings. :triportsad:

I had heard Android has issues supporting two uSD cards. It is ironic that the rare players that do support 2 slots, are using cheap, low power SoC's that can't support the library size one may have with two cards installed!

It's a niche within a niche. I doubt I'll see it happen for years considering many prefer streaming music and not offline capabilities.

My only other option is to buy an Android DAP and compress my audio files to a lossy format to fit onto a single 1.5TB microSD card. Though I feel as if that defeats the point of having a DAP honestly.

I never use playlists. I only browse folders. No indexing needed for that.

Have any of the new FW updates on the RS2 helped with lag issues and general UI improvements, especially in terms of speed?

It did for me. Mine runs faster than my friend’s RS2.
