HiBy R8 User Impressions

Haven't seen it mentioned in this thread yet, but it looks like firmware version 1.23G is available under System Update. It's not listed in Hiby's Help Center so I am curious if anyone has updated yet.
"Fixed issue where volume adjustments made while screen locked are not saved" - I wonder if that is to address some of the volume knob complaints?

It has been mentioned here in post #1822 a few pages back. The item that I find interesting is the 180 degree screen rotation. This will be a useful tool for those that want the cable connections coming out of the top of the unit rather than the bottom.

It's funny, on my FiiO M15 the cable connections come out of the top - unlike other FiiO DAP's - which is the first DAP that could make use of a dock - the FiiO DK1 - so when I saw the "rotation" feature option on the M15, I kinda wondered why I would want it. :)

Upside down sounds more neutral ?

Even better than that! You take V-shaped IEM, flip the DAP upside down, and the FR curve flips along with it, changing the sound sig to mid-centric :p

Unfortunately HiBy didn't take the extra step of reversing the buttons and volume wheel when the screen is flipped. That would have made it even more intuitive. Now you need to remember the buttons and volume turns are reversed. Apparently they flipped the buttons on the R2 with the same feature so hopefully they add the option in the R8 in a future update.

Came back from a week trip to find my r8 battery at 10%. Is that normal? Charged it to 36% and tried to listen while it was charging. Nothing! No sound. Can’t get it to even show its playing. Plays fine if I remove charging cable. Any help would be appreciated. I’m getting a bad taste about a $1800 player whos maker can’t be bothered to create a manual.

You can download the user’s manual here at the bottom of the page:

Although I have to admit, this is nothing compared to a complete manual.

Strange I charge and listen all the time no problems. I also had couple times the battery being depleted to 0% so I charge first to 10% then boot and charge and listen...

Unfortunately, the quick user's guide is the same "minimal" instructions that come hard copy with the DAP. So far, I haven't seen any hint of a real user's manual. I think this is a serious oversight on HiBy's part, especially after seeing the iBasso's DX220 user's manual.

Cheers! :beerchug:

I didn’t even realize there was a user’s guide included in the box

Yeah they should have the real user’s manual. A bit strange for a supposedly premium product.

Meaning no disrespect to HiBy but have you seen the basic grammar errors in the UI when performing certain functions, and you want a full user manual translated into multiple languages?

Personally if you know how to use an Android phone you should not need a user manual for a DAP, even one with as many cool features as the R8. Just my opinion, not saying it wouldn't be useful for others.
