My R5 (original) should have arrived yesterday for battery service based on my minimal understanding of the Chinese postal site. Maybe HiBy might want to send me this unit instead of the R5.....? Its nice to dream. Though I do like the sound of the first R5, AKM and all.

Liked what I saw and was looking to get a R5 anyway so just jumped in with early bird option for this R5 2nd Gen as only works out at £326 with delivery to UK and R5 Sabre on Amazon UK is £399 (even with duties should be less than R5 Sabre on AmazonUK)

2.5, 3.5 and 4.4mm connections  If battery life in economy mode are real that's insane for an Android device (I have a Sony 1AM2 on order with supposed 40 hr but that's 4x the price and size!)

Interesting. I was hoping for a $349 early bird price, but not bad as it comes with a case. Big boy though. Decisions decisions...

I Kickstarted the R3 and loved it. My wallet may cry, let's see the reviews!

Not bad at all. I might just sell my ibasso dx160 and buy this instead. Can you use Hiby devices remotely from your smartphone, like a streamer. Does anyone know?
I think that's what Hiby Link is if I recall. Only Android 8.1 is its disappointment but at this price its understandable I suppose. So long as Streaming apps support Android 8.1 for a while still.

I somewhat remember hiby or shanling has that function but not sure. My biggest disappointment with ibasso was lacking this use case.

It seems like the closest competitor to this would be the Shanling M3X. While the Shanling has an older Android 7.1, it has the slightly better Snapdragon 430 SoC.
Both have 2GB Ram, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi 2.4 & 5.
The R5 (Gen 2) has newer Android 8.1, bigger screen, bigger battery/longer battery life and the Class A amplifier circuit, but in general it's a bigger and heavier DAP than the Shanling.

I made a chart comparing all of the specifications I was able to find between the 2 DAPs.

Hello,
I have been working on Daps for the last few days and have already decided.
And in the end, they all fell out of my wishlist.

I think Daps are great in general because they are handy and it's also great to laze around without having to go to the terminals.
But what I have read about the operating systems I find questionable.

Firstly, the apps that are no longer supported at some point.
And Android is always a good backdoor for hackers.
Imagine being hacked because of a tap?
I find that questionable.

I know that many manufacturers can't do much about it because it's because of Android and Google that they do very little in terms of security and compatibility.
And prefer to hold on to everything with licensing agreements.
We have great manufacturers all over the world who build their devices in such a way that they last a minimum of 10 years if they are treated well, and you usually have to dispose of them after 5 years because of the software.
I find this disappointing for all device based Android devices, Apple is not better but they have done more, I must add.
My Ipad Mini 3 is still supported today it is slower but it still runs and I can still use it for streaming.

If you are honest so many important resources are wasted because of software things.
I was briefly annoyed because now I have bought the Hip 2 and the new R5 is coming out.
But when I just saw an even older Snapdragon and old Android I could just breathe a sigh of relief.

In my opinion, it is cheaper to buy a mobile headphone amplifier and use it with the tablet or smartphone and replace it in 5-7 years if necessary.then everything is fresh and fully usable again.

As I said, I think Dap is great but there is still a lot to be done on the software side.
An older Dap should be able to benefit from an update just like current models.

Newer OS versions tend to need more space, more CPU, more RAM and this is a budget end device using Open Android (free to Hiby?)

Only time I'd even have wifi on is when syncing offline Tidal/AmazonHD music. This is also only reason to buy and Android DAP, for streaming music services.

If someone wants to hack my DAP to see my music list they must have sad lives 😆

If you get 5 years out of it , then its like £75/year to own one, hardly breaking the bank for many.

It’s getting harder and harder to justify entry level DAPs with the advances in dongles over the past year.

Been doing dongles for years and still use BTR5 wired to my phone with UAPP, but its just not as convenient as just plugging your wired earphones into the DAP.

Agreed, and I am tempted by this new R5 but the Android 8.1 is hard to swallow.
