I really do not care for Opera. However, I need to buy a copy of Tosca and La Boheme as gifts. Anybody have preferences for recordings of these operas? Any additional explanation of why you prefer that particular recording would also be helpful. Thanks.

A wonderful resource for classical music/opera is "The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs". It is an indespensable reference tool. If you don't have acces to that (you might try the public library), try this independent resource , which is opposite Penguin in opinion, but might be just what you are looking for. Basically, two points of view. Hope this helps.
