Hey all

I'd like to be able to send a friend of mine some files online (music, docs, etc) and I really have no idea how to do so. We both have broadband, so we should have decent transfer speeds, but what application/util would we use?

I know nothing about FTPs, etc, so if you guys have any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

thanks!

Messenger works great unless your firewall messes things up causing really slow transfer rates.

MSN Messenger can be very picky with firewalls. I have a firewall built in to my DSL router. Messenger won't transfer data through the firewall at all. There is no setting that will let Messenger get through the firewall. If I recall correctly, Microsoft's website confirms my findings.

Here is a free FTP program that I've used. This program lets one or both users setup their computer as an FTP server. FTP Software link

AIM works as well. I do it all the time.

Just be sure to established a direct connection by clicking the little picture button to the right of the link button at the top.

Instant messenger's are an easy but often slow method. What IM's do you use? AIM works well for me. But remember that even at maximum speeds, you will be limited by the much lower upload speeds the average broadband connection has.

Another way is to use a free (or pay, if you want) online file "vault" storage. That way you can upload at your leisure and then your friends and family can download at their leisure. That way you don't have to babysit the file transfer.

If you have an online host and have Internet Explorer 6, you can drag and drop files and folder in FTP. It may be best to set a password at least, though.

I think there was one called big vault or something. I haven't checked in a long time. But chances are, ones with any real amount of storage space will be paid service.

Yes there is, actually. I've never gotten it to work through my firewall though when I tried it a couple years ago so I can't help you with how you use it.

Why not just burn the files onto a cdr or cdr's and mail them to him?

That's NOT the point, at all.

The point is to have 2 way upload/download exchanging of files. The files will probably change over times. A CD is not the solution, especially when one friend lives out of the country.

thanks anyway.
