A few years ago I settled on the Beyer DT770 and Westone 4R and decided to give my wallet a break. But I recently got bored of my Westones, and wanted to try a set of open cans. I stumbled on a sale on the Fidelio X2HR a few weeks ago and gave in. I bought the X2HR, liked the sound but found it uncomfortable, so I returned it and got the SHP9600 (comfortable for my large head). Definitely different from the closed DT770, but I like it so far. I feel I have room for one more set of open cans in my collection, so I'd love to hear some suggestions.
I'd like to keep it under $200, preferably under $150 (not expecting magic at this price point). I will mostly be using this with various types of music, usually connected to Schiit Fulla v3 or EarStudio ES100. Almost no gaming or movies.
Currently I own: Beyer DT770 (80 ohm), Philips SHP9600, Sennheiser HD569 (not great, but I got it as a gift and has sentimental value)
Owned and liked: Sony CD780, Koss KSC-35, Westone 4R
Owned and meh: Audio-technica M50 (narrow sound stage and uncomfortable) and A700, Shure SE215, Sennheiser Amperior, Final Audio E3000 (too dark and muddy)
I think something neutral or slightly mid-forward would be nice, and I've been thinking about the HD58x and DT880. But I feel like if I get the 58x I'll have to get better pads with it, pushing it above my budget. Can you suggest me something different, or is the 58x pretty much inevitable?
