HAHAHAHA-
Just kidding.

No need for any mods, just remove the outer sleeving [very carefully] until the inner wires are exposed, tin them, then connect the wires.  Wrap the new solder joints with electrical tape and you are good to go.
The wires are enamel-coated, so you will need to burn off the enamel with a lighter so you can tin the wires.  The cotton strands that are surrounded by the enamel-coated copper strands of each wire will turn black, just ignore them.  Without the enamel, the copper strands should be shiny.  If any black residue remains, scratch it off and you should get the shiny metal underneath.  If the copper isn't shiny, you might have goofed.
You just need to tin a few millimeters.  Too much and you may leave the wires a bit too stiff to bend comfortably (that is, without sharp bends) inside of the cups.

For the left cup, what I would do before reconnecting the main long cable is to undo the knot that you see, pull out the short segment of the main cable that remains and throw it away or save it for future use, then put the rest of the cable in there and tie a new knot and connect it to the solder pads where the short segment that you removed used to be.  Be sure to leave a few inches of the cable within the cup just like there used to be so that you can open it again later if it needs a recable or repair of whatever kind.
Or do the detachable modification, whatever you want.
I hope that is all clear.
