This is what I've heard as well and looking at to buy myself, but for console FPS gaming.

You definitely want open back.
If you're happy to spend the full 300, Sennheiser HD600 are open back and fairly neutral without being completely boring.
As mentioned, AKGs open backs are considered good for gaming because of the large soundstage (K701/702/Q701 and I assume K612 too).

  I have been taking a close look at the DT 990s and they seem nice. Today (after my previous post) I read about differences between open and closed headphones so I can definitely say I'm looking for an open style.
 
Though after hours of searching (I kind of got myself lost for a while) I think the MDR-MA900's actually seem pretty promising and do what I need. They look like they hit the mark for comfort, gaming, immersion, and music so I may end up going with these.
 
My initial intentions were to get the "best headphones for fps gaming" but it seems I would be losing out in some area's by doing that.

There seems to be a lot of positive feedback on the MA900s.

Any idea what sort of amp I would need for this? It's impedance says 50ohms on Amazon's page. I can't find/don't know of an amp that's <6ohms.
 
Anyone know a good amp to pair with the Sennheisers? (558 or 598? both 50ohms)

the 558 doesn't really need an amp, but i don't know about the 598 since i don't own one.
 
you cant really go off the product specs since they dont really represent how much or how little a amp will affect their sound. a good example is the HE-400s, they are 32ohm but still need a decent amp for them to sound very good

The Senn HD558 and HD598 will work plugged into just about anything amplified or not.

Thanks guys. That doesn't necessarily mean they're worse than something like the DT990 Pro 250ohm + a 32ohm amp*, does it?

The DT990s have more "life" to their sound (full bass & full treble), then the HD558s.
The 1/8th is not really a rule, more a good guide line.
I plug my 50-Ohm HD558s in to my Essence STX, which has a 10-Ohm output impedance, so that is only 1/5th
