So I recently bought a Chinese made DAC/AMP combo from an eBay seller minishow0328.

Specs:
 
DAC: Burr Brown DSD1796 chip
AMP: MAXIM MAX4410
Resolution support: DSD64, DSD128 and PCM 32/384K
 
The problem is that I can't seem to get it to playback high resolution PCM (FLAC etc) or DSD properly. It's a XMOS U8 platform, running on Windows XMOS stereo Class 2 Audio driver version 2.23. I can get the device to play up to DSD64 (but seems to convert to PCM) and FLAC 24/96K. Anything higher and the sound starts to degrade and generate hiss. Can anyone here please help? I've tried so many times to get it to work...
 
I've so far tried on 3 machines, 2 running windows 8.1, one freshly installed.
One running Windows 7. 
 
Here are the steps that I've taken and the settings:
 
1. Plug in DAC to PC using USB cable. DAC powered by external source, running 7-8 Volts. It's a 2.5A adapter so I'm sure it's enough.
 
2. Windows driver install fails since it's not a universal driver device. Proceed to install XMOS stereo USB 2.0 driver V2.23.
 
3. Set as default device in Windows Sound Manager.
 
4. Install Foobar 2000, running version 1.3.8
 
5. Install SACD and ASIO plugin
 
6. Set playback device to ASIO

I've bought the same Dac, and happened to find your post while doing research before purchase.
 
 
Since you've posted your doubts a long time ago maybe you already sorted the problem out.
 
 
But anyway I can tell you what I've made to make the DAC work properly.
 
 
 
Hardware:
 
I've used the USB as input AND as power source. I can't see any diffewrence from using a separate power source to power up the DAC.
 
 
Software:
 
 
Driver
 
a) type of driver:

I've used the XMOS USB Class 2 driver provided by the seller. Also, I've found that the updated drivers from these sites work (http://jlsounds.com/drivers.html / http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/dac/Xmos/XmosEN.htm). I've foregone the official windows 10 USB audio 2.0 driver.
 
b) driver installation: because some of these drivers have no digital signiture, before trying to install them in windows 10 you have to disable driver signature verification (http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/). After you've boot, during that session, you can install any insigned drivers.

b) Configuring output options
 
 
After component install use these configs both for DSD playback (up to DSD128 in Windows, DoP mode (Native DSD and DSD256 possibly only available in Linux OS) AND high res PCM.
 
1- File>preferences>tools>SACD - select only DSD
 
2-File>preferences>output>asio - select your audio device, something like "XMOS USB 2.0 ST 3078" . The "ST 3078 is the name of my driver install, mind that this varies.
 
3- In the same menu under "custom channel mappings", click "ad new" and select again the same "XMOS USB 2.0 ST 3078" driver. After this, in the "custom channel mappings", you'll have something like "XMOS USB 2.0 ST 3078 - my channel mapping"
 
4- click "apply"
 
5-Again, go to File>preferences>output and select "DSD : XMOS USB 2.0 ST 3078 - my channel mapping"
 
 
And that's how in my DAC that is exactely like yours I'm able to play any audio format be it PCM or DSD within the hardware limitations of the DAC
