Hi!

Not sure if this is the right forum but just want to seek for your advise or opinion regarding building a personal sound system. I'll be using it for music, games or movies that will be enough for a room or in our house. Our house is not that big, I think it's only 170 square meter.

It's all started when I passed by to a shop with them displaying the Bowers & Wilkins sound system and was amazed with the sound quality but it's too expensive for me, I think it's around $2700+ (converted from P130,000+)

I know I need to have the following dedicated satellites (5 speakers), subwoofer, amplifier, receiver (?) and cables? What I'm missing? I have zero knowledge regarding the technicalities for this but speaking of, what or where should I know first? Hoping for your insight on this, I prefer the sound quality will be decent enough which is detailed with a decent to great bass but not really into powerful bass and decent to great mid. I'm more on relaxing type of music like acoustic, indie, scores, EDM, pop, etc. in short depends on my mood.

My budget would be around $1000-$1500 but lower is better. Following brands I know which is decent are Onkyo and Pioneer, any insight? Upgrade in the future would be nice so I'm looking for a setup with a flexibility to upgrade.

By the way I'm from the Philippines so I have to consider the following available brands here, I'm not considering shipping from other country as it will costs me a lot.

Thank you in advance. :)

Cheap systems for movies tend to be rather poor with music. If you can forego the surround sound, you could easily build a good 2-channel system that will be fine with movies and pretty great with music. Indeed brands where you are may be an issue.

However, if you already have a device that plays movies that has a standard digital output, you'd pretty much only need an integrated amp and speakers, if not a DAC as well (if you wanted). All surround amps have is a lot more connections for more inputs and speakers.

Hi thanks for the reply. I only have a computer speaker here which is Swans M10. Any recommendation for the specific brands of speakers, amp or DAC?

First off, you might get more luck in the local HT forum, especially whenit comes to prices for local acquisitions, used gear, and even how to save on shipping, especially when you can get last year's/outgoing current receivers a lot cheaper on Amazon. This will be the hub of your entire system, but as important as it is to have certain newer features, the reality is that these get upgraded every few years, so best bet is always to get one or two notches above entry level as long as the amplifier is decent, then get speakers it can easily drive.

Second, which is something you might end up seeing on that forum, is to build around an affordable but otherwise current (in terms of features) A/V receiver. Something like a 2015 Yamaha RX-V4__ series, and then get the speakers and subwoofer from either Wharfedale (which has lower prices in SEAsia for some reason) or from A-Audio (they have a showroom in Makati now I think).

Yep, but I barely post there - I just end up drooling while I don't want to spend any more on this old house (same one I grew up in) before I renovate it or build a new one from the ground up with rooms just for audio.

If you're interested in building a 'budget' HT (Home Theater) system, then you should go to the appropriate site. Just look for the sub forum and ask around. Great site for AV!
