  I just got an error that "Shockwave Flash" has crashed. I chose "reload" and now things are back to normal.
 
Is this something needed for the ads or something that allows the basic page to function?

No, you should disable it. If it hasn't been updated in a while it is a security hazard as well. It should at least be set not to automatically load.

The odd thing is that I never installed it and I just built this PC a couple of weeks ago.
