If SS is a must, I'd get the JVC SS 5.1 adaptor.. For movies, everyone who has it (That I talked to), says they were floored by its presentation & SS effects, For gaming I got responses from awesome to just ok..

for 400.00 I'd recommend
AKG 701: 240.00
JVC SS 5.1 adapter: 90.00
Zalman Mic..(Not sure about the price)

Surround-sound in headphones is a marketing ploy. Hell, surround sound itself is a marketing ploy. Surround sound in (pretty much all) movies is generated from 2 channels. Games are pretty much the only things that have real surround sound.

Ok I think I've decided to get either the AKG HSC 271 or the AKG HSD 271. Which would be better for playing games in a regular room?

Odd.. You have a 400.00 budget & are going with the 271's? There are much better headphones for gaming in your price range. I heard the 271's are very analytical & non colored, which equals boring & lifeless gaming IMO..
