They look tempting. I wonder how they compare to the Senn's HD650?

The K-702 are better in any regard, you'll need some amp, or sound card and not necessary tube amp. The K-702 sounds better with SS amp.

If your music collection it's base on 128k mp3, or so. Maybe better to go with some veiled and dull hps like HD-650.

That's been discussed quite a bit here - you should find plenty of comparisons in the Headphones Forum.

Personally, I found the HD-650 much superior to the K-701/2. The HD-650 has a much more natural, balanced sound. For me, the vocals on the K-701/2 are off and don't sound natural. My K-701 spent a lot of time in its box until I got around to selling it. I'm hoping the rumored new AKG flagship follows in the steps of the wonderful K-501 and K-1000.

Last week i tried them, and they are fantastic!
they offer a super comfy, over-the-ear design, great sound at home and with iPods, and come with a detachable headphone cable.

I'm listening to the Emerson Quartet at the moment. All 4 instruments sound identical to the instruments I play and work on (violin luthier) every single day.

I'm wearing HD600. I've tried the K701 but found them quite thin, though very detailed. Interesting cans, but not ideal.

whilst i agree with you RE: 701 vs 501/1000, the HD650 is not more balanced (and IMO not more natural).
The 650 is very laid back and quite muddy, and has overly romantic mids.

701 is a lot better in my opinion IF you can amp this beast

The HD600 is very different from 650 and IMO much much better

Things K70x does well IMO:
-clarity
-detail (especially in the vocals)
-speed
-tightness and accuracy of tone

Things it lacks:
-warmth
-low end bass volume. (especially with kick drums)

As to the bass issue (which is highly debated):
I find that the tone of the bass is great on K70x. It's tight and accurate. The problem is that it needs to a little louder and it's on the thin side.

I've only tried the 600s, though I hear they're similar. I found that the 600s had a bit warmer tone and musicality, but really lacked in detail, clarity, and tone. I found them a bit too mid-bassy.

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of the k70x. I'm running them through an audio-gd compass by the way.
Good luck!

Well if my employer has an accommodation program with Senn I can get a killer price on the HD600 and 650s. They however only have the AKG K242HD now and was holding out to see if the lineup for the holidays will broaden a bit. As they do have a program for Harman Kardon.

I've heard both on my rig extensively and the differences are very much exaggerated.

I got the chance to compare the K-240MKll to the K-702 on Phonotor amp.
The MKll are great, but they are 70-80% of the K702.

If you can get the K-242HD around $100 it's a good deal. You can get the K701 used for around $200 on the FS forum. Better to go with the 702 new. They will need minimum of 150 hours burn in.

I'm a fan of the 701/2. I find them to be detailed and neutral. The clarity is excellent. Although the mids aren't as full as my HF-2, I find the highs more refined. Soundstage is great. Even though I wouldn't mind the bass to extend an octave or two lower, the bass quality is excellent and hardly what I'd call thin. I believe that the Senn and Grado sounds to be colored in different ways. Even if I enjoy the Grado character. The 701/2, to me, is much more neutral. IMHO of course.
