Hi I'm looking for recommendations around the $120 USD mark shipped to Australia for a friend. He listens to rock/electronica and will be wearing them for hours of gaming as well as the occassional movie. He wears glasses so comfort is an important factor here. I was thinking maybe the V6's with Beyer pads?

Sennheiser HD280 Pro 120 USD
Audio Technica ATH-ES7 121.94 USD
Denon D1001 133.98 USD
Sony MDR-V6 89.98 USD

between the 280 and the d1001, the denons were much better in my opinion. 280s can become uncomfortable if wearing for extended listening period, however there isolation is unmatched

I have only heard the D1000 and the HD280, the HD280 has a more controlled bass, but a weaker one. The D1000 has some slightly bloated sounds across all frequencies. But the HD280 is dry while the D1000 is airy and sounds more interesting.

As for comfort I also wear glasses, but I can fit both of them on.

Are the Denons that much more comfortable?

hd280s get their great isolation from clamping on your head very tightly, it never really bothered me until i purchased a few other pairs of headphones and realized how much better the denons feel.

If he likes his stuff tighter in sound, HD280s. Denons are fluffier in a way, not as engaging, but I imagine better for anything that requires soundstage (movies, gaming alike). Comfort is a very relative thing, but hearsay and reviews always praise Denon phones. The D1001's also more portable than its big brother the D2000.

You can relax the band of the 280s by keep them on a bowling ball or something wider than a head. Did this with my RPHTX7s and now they're some of my most comfortable phones I have, but certainly not a phone I'd use if I wanted the best movie/gaming audio experience.

I didn't vote because I've never done any comparisons, but for years I've owned and been satisfied with HD280s. Comfort's never been an issue—I also wear glasses—but this thread has given me something to think about, because I've been contemplating a new pair of Sennheisers.

When I went to the store in the beginning I honestly couldn't tell jack **** from the ES7 to the D1001 since I'm not really used to the high quality sound yet but the D1001 was the one I want because even though I couldn't really tell the difference in sound I could tell the difference in comfort. D1001 took comfort by a landslide. I have my Denons on nearly 8 hours a day with no problemo.

No contest. The Denons are far (and I do mean far) more comforatable than the Sennheisers. The HD280s are big and heavy in comparison. Sonically the 280s are OK, but kind of blah. The Denons while not perfect tend to get you more involved in the sound.

And yes, I have both.

I own the D1000s and the ES7s. For sound only I prefer the ES7s. To me they are cleaner without the noticeable weak spots in the Denons (looser base, some sibilance, and weaker mids with my other equipment). Though they are initially more comfortable, they make my ears sweat more.

I can't speak to the other phones in your list.

Out of that list, the ATH-ES7 is the best sonically for electronica and rock, while the D1000 are easily the most comfy. The ATH-ES7 also does get quite a bit hot on the ears.

HD280's are pretty awful in the comfort department, and the sound offered isn't too impressive.
