What's the best headphone for first person shooters like CS?
I want to be able to hear exactly where my opponents are. I don't care that much about the sound. The positions of other players are most important to me. And I would like to keep the cost below $100.

Please help a nub out

edit: forgot to mention I'm looking for closed phones so I can go to LANs

Sony MDR-V6, durable, good bass, good directional cues and positioning, perfect for FPSs.

Currently I use HD497s with Metal of Honor, Battlefield 1942, and even CnC Generals (yeah I know, its not a FPS). They work quite well and are not very source dependent so they should work well with a variety of sound cards.

Grado SR-60 is a good starter phone. unlike the other phones, they really don't need a dedicated amp which usually costs $50-$200 at a minimum.

The phones I have most experience with gaming on are DT250-80s at $160 new and DT770-250s at $160 new as well.

I would recommend DT250-80s for gaming hands down. They have the most impact overall (get your blood pumping type of sound), have a nice punchy bass, and are forgiving of the flaws of soundcards, plus they isolate real well, are smallish, and really durable. Good for LAN parties!

The HD-600 makes a fine gaming headphone but you need at least a $500 amp or you won't be able to get them to sound coherent enough. The phone itself has a list price of $445.00. This headphone I use the most of all for all purposes.

The HD-497 is a good phone as well, is a bit cheaper, and has a nice sound to it. It's a bit muddy sounding but is really balanced compared to other phones in its class and doesnt need a dedicated amp.

Cheers,
Geek

If you're going to do any laning, you'll want closed. That and the 100$ top end, limits the options. If you want to feel the bass, the V-6. If you want more spatial cues, either the HD-280 or the D66.

edit
I use A900's for gaming and with their wide soundstage, it's easy to tell where the bad guys are.

yea, I'm probably going to LAN...so I'm looking for closed phones.

so the grados and senn 497 are out of my choices...

that makes the list:

V6
280
DT250-80 (impossible to find for under $100?)
D66 (is this closed?)

any more suggestions?

If you're wearing closed cans at a lan though you won't be able to hear your team yelling at you. Anyway, if you still want closed ones, get a pair of Aiwa HP-X222's, they sound like crap but they're great for CS and can be found for 30 bucks at Best Buy.

well do closed cans really block out that much noise that I can't hear what my team is yelling at me?

Yes, lol.

nah i have used closed headphones and i can hear them fine when they yell at me. ive played in many counter strike tournaments and you will NOT want open headphones, i made the mistake of using a pair of open phones last tournament and i couldnt hear anything in game

If you get open headphones you are going to hear other teams and all other outside nonsense, so closed is still recommended

Sony V6's have my vote hands down for gaming. Closed enough to keep out noise but open enough to hear someone yelling beside your head.

As already stated, great directionay cues, good sound all around. Excellent choice.
