I would love to see headphones classified into 5 basic sound signatures.
1. uphill (light bass, heavy treble)
2. downhill (heavy bass, light treble)
3. V (heavy bass, light mids, heavy treble)
4. inverted V (low bass, heavy mids, low treble)
5. flat
I just reject this notion that some cans are for audiophiles while some cans are just for less serious people. What a load of crap. Because let's face it, any "serious" can is not going to be bass heavy. And that implies that a "good" can must not have a lot of bass.
I wish we had a database of headphones and users could choose one of the above to describe a particular can. The aggregated info could be very useful for purchasers and we wouldn't have to rely on "artistic" descriptions of cans and have something a bit more akin to a focus group. It would also allow for the definition of "neutral" to change over time as more and more people vote and population demographics shift.
