I got stunning results by connecting stereo mic to my Practical Devices XM4 portable headphone amp input. I connected my amplifier's headphone out to the DAT. What do you think about this concept? The sound is really good. Basically, XM4 amplifies microphone signal and send it to the recorder.

You might have better results using an actual microphone preamp, since they're designed for the lower level signals microphones output, but there's not a lot of difference between a microphone preamp and a headphone amplifier.
