Thinking of getting a self build amp kit wondering whats recommended ?

Bottlehead Crack (for OTL tube), or one of Millet's designs (Millet MiniMAX is a good one, easy to find in Kit form) for hybrid tube.
 
O2, Lovely Cube or M3 for solid state.

Having heard them, I also recommend the Bijou, and EHHA... as well as the Beta22 - but I think the Crack, and O2 are probably the best bang for the buck.

I'm really impressed by replacing the 4 coupling PP capacitors (0.1 mdf) to oil caps. The clarity of each instrument is the first thing I noticed.
Then the separation of each instrument is so much more pronounced, producing a wider soundstage. Very good!!
P.S. the review from Skylab without the oil cap upgrade.

+1 for Bottlehead's Crack amplifier.  While the price has increased recently, I still think it's worth it.  I can't comment on too many other amps, but I had zero soldering skills and it was fun to build, even better to listen with.
 
If you do end up deciding on the Crack, you may want to think about purchasing the Speedball upgrade as well.  (Don't have to do it right away)
