Try downloading the latest Java update directly from Oracle. Install from the .dmg file. Then go to System Preferences - other- Java, and set security to medium. This worked for me. Apparently Apple is not including Java updates in new software releases.

Java update seemed to work until I tried sorting or opening a photo in the for sale forums. Then the system locked up again. I have to quit out of Safari. The quit option in the Safari menu works although it responds slow. I do not have to force quit, but the Head-fi pages do not respond at all. after sorting or viewing 1 photo. I hope that this helps in troubleshooting.

I think that Safari is probably the culprit, not Head-fi. I have uninstalled the Oracle Java due to the lock-ups, and returned to Apple's included Java, but the same result continues. I have had to disable Java and Javascript in order to navigate Head-fi. Hope that this helps.

The problems continue with Safari with the spinning beach ball of death on head-fi.   Everytime I access anything on head-fi it works for a few minutes and then Safari locks up and needs to quit.  This is the only site where I have had any issues.
 
Using Safari Version 5.1.8 (6534.58.2).  Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.  Software completely up to date.  I have turned off Java but still have Enable JavaScript enabled.
 
Hope you can fix it soon as this is unbearable.

A little more research with the Activity window open in Safari and it appears to be related to the iframe for ads.saymedia.com loading.  It usually happens as soon as I click on a secondary link after loading any of the head-fi.org URLs.  For example, going to the For Sale forum and then clicking to get to page 2 will cause the lockup.

Problems with Safari are not only on OS X. It's also on iOS as well. The page will not load fully and freeze. I will be forced to restart Safari. It's annoying.

My safari goes beach-ball as well whenever I enter the picture viewer on head-fi.  The cpu maxes one of its cores out, something's being ran inefficiently and causing cpu hangs from the picture viewer.

Pages don't complete loading, beach ball spins, need to close all windows and quit Safari for anything to work again.
Works just fine in Chrome.
 
 
Java is disabled in Safari for security reasons, and I'm not going to change that so one poorly coded site can be full of ad links, and have way too much junk all over the page.
 
The PROBLEM is that when searching around for something using Google, and ACCIDENTALLY clicking on a link to Head-Fi is like stepping on a landmine. Head-Fi brings down the whole browser.

I get this too.  Not every picture but very often.  Sometimes it will let me hit refresh and do a force refresh; other times I have to hold the power button to hard reboot the computer.  This only happens on head-fi - no other web site gives me this problem.

There isn't, as far as I'm aware, any Java used on Head-Fi. What is being used (as most sites nowadays use) is Javascript/AJAX. That is used for features such as being able to write a quick reply to a thread without the entire page reloading when you post.
 
I have the opposite problem: Head-Fi works fine for me, but other sites are causing my browser to beach-ball. It could actually be Safari rather than the site.

Having huge issues with head-fi. Any time I'm on the for sale or trade forum my safari crashes on my iPhone,iPad and Mac. Never happened with any other site and it ALWAYS happens on head-fi. If I look at a product for sale and then jump back it'll freeze every time. I've tried reporting the problem but haven't heard anything back. This has been going on for over a month. I can't be the only one this is happening with.

I'm still having issues with Safari Mobile as well. The desktop site still crashes for me.
