I don't know, possibly yes. I wouldn't regard the GS1000 as a #1 candidate that screams for modding towards more soundscape.

But you never know. Look at the modded MS Pro / RS1 couple, quite on par stock, one became absolutely glorious, the other catastrophical. Trial and error is the way.

I thought you knew that I am from team cable sceptic.

Well, personally I have heard 2 hp which were using other than stock cable. First one was AKG K81 DJ and nothing was better. Another one was HD650 and something happened to me, I really liked HD650 for the first time. Not that much to own one, but still... So, its like 50/50.

I've also heared two very different sounding HD650s (one muffled and one good one). Both had stock cable, but different production date. There were rumors about new sound sig "on the quiet" and I tend to approve that.

We're getting OT.

hahaha no worries about off topic posts. As long as we are learning and educating each other thats all that matters. But back on topic.

One person here suggested using two sets of bowls which may have a similar effect to liberators. I think I may have an idea of a DIY that would be able to take advantage of that. I'll try to work up a diagram and see if anybody can pull it off. Getting a pair of bowls shipped to Aus may take awhile and cost more. Will post tomoro when the diagram is finished. I hope I don't procrastinate =P

Haha be sure to come back and post some pics for us.

I would think that if you do the double bowl mod, you would also have to tape them to have the same effect as the liberators. Give that a try between mods.

The inner diameter of the 1st bowl should be stabilized with epoxy under that scenario. Stabilized not only for solidness, but also for acoustical reasons. Foam has totally different prosperties than ...umhh... hardstuff.

Diagram not done.. Got something better! Actually went through with the project. One problem tho.. Only had one set of bowls so I just took a listen through one ear. I do hear an increase in soundstage and an overall darker sound now. I can't tell yet whether that change is a good or bad thing. I'll really require two sets of bowls to do that. But here is my "prototype" double bowl mod.

vnovo6.jpg

Taking into consideration the fact pointed out by filipelli that the second bowl would bend out of shape due to the pressure of the clamp, I decided to make a cast that would retain its shape despite said pressure.

I used a sheet of overhead projector paper and measured the depth of the double bowls. Made it so that it it would be just a bit shorter then the total depth. Cut it out and wrapped it tightly around with as little overlapping of the paper as possible (1cm roughly) with tape. It needed to be tight. Not overly tight but tight enough so the bowls would be firmly in place. Also I pushed it further back behind the first set of bowls so that all air would travel as much as possible towards the second bowl and into the ear. By doing this I also stop the overhead paper actually pushing into the skin by leaving a bit of the second bowl sticking out just enough for comfort. I also tried to put a layer of overhead to line the inside of the two bowls. It created a tunnel that stopped the sound resonating through the foam but directly through the paper and to the second bowl. It made everything sound brighter but also seemed more 'tinny'. Again I can't really be 100% sure about this as it was from one ear only. I failed at creating a proper overhead paper cylinder that is tight and secure for the inside of the double bowls but shall try if I get a second pair of bowls.

I'd also like to point out that this has pretty much made the bowls circumaural.

I got this idea from the Basshead mod thread where someone used a similar clear sheet of plastic in the place of tape. I guess it might also have a bass increasing effect. I'm not sure but theoretically it should. The darker sound I was hearing might have been just that but its hard to tell with one side.

Thats really something, but I am not sure if this mode are similar, regarding sonicaly effects, to LIBERATROS.
From the pictures point only I think that the drivers are way far from the ears and thats not good, imo.
Keep posting

Yeh I'd love to get my hands on a pair of liberators and compare them but till I ever get the chance, I hope that someone else can replicate this mod and compare them with the liberators.

I think if you buy a pair of GS1000 pads you will be closer to result than with this mod, imo.

I agree to Blackmore'e theoretical doubt about too much distance between driver and ear, and I personally found the effects of the tape mod that's involved here far too exagerated (totally nutty bass).

But that is pure theory. You never know how things turn out in reality, so keep the ball running with this mod.

Renugaid, if you are so greedy about a set of Liberators or distancers, why don't you build yourself something provisorical out of strengthened cardboard? It can't be so difficult to fumble something with 4cm inner diameter and 1,3 cm total hight and some final bulge IMO. There must be cardboard, scissors and glue available in AUS - or do they really sell nothing but meat and beer down under?
