Okay great, thanks! As you may have noticed in the Pico Amp/DAC topic I'm considering my options on whether to get a seperate amp and DAC or have them combined.

I was considering the iBasso D10 but am leaning towards this one as the feedback on Head-Fi is so positive. Does anyone know how they compare? I'm wanting to drive some HD 650s, I presume this would be up for the job?

The Pico DAC/Amp or Amp should put out no less than twice the power, due to its 2-cell (8.4V@full charge) battery, which is needed for high impedance headphones such as the HD650

The D10 has less voltage swing than the Pico, since I think the D10 uses 5v to charge the 3.7v battery, while the Pico uses 12v to charge the 8.4v battery. Since the HD600/800 is 300-600 ohms at various frequencies it needs the voltage swing to get adequate power, so the Pico will have more of that. The D10 is best with 120 ohm and less headphones. The D10 improves with better opamps as far as sonic synergy, but it will not drive the HD600 quite as well if you like powerful sound. The Pico and 3MOVE have that power, and somehow the Vivid V1 does too, but I think they use a voltage multiplier inside the V1 amp. Even the 5v P-51 is slightly more powerful with the HD600/800 than the D10.

PS: had the window open too long - Justin beat me to it. Also, the D10 does have a little more power for HD600/650 than the Predator, but the Pico and 3MOVE still beat the D10 power levels by a bigger margin for high impedance phones.

Right, so the Pico would be better suited to the HD 650. Thanks for the info chaps! I should probably start my own seperate topic really as I'm undecided on whether to go for a portable amp/dac, desktop amp or something like the Apogee duet... I'm quite confused!

the power point makes me think that thought the D10 is a great deal, my 3move is perfectly fine

thought I want a pico dac, and possible pico slim which I still want info on

For comparison purposes are there any other dacs that use the same chip as this one? I'm in between this and other dacs and the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger is because I'd like more input options.

edit: the "all the dacs money can buy" thread needs to be updated.

The iBasso portable DAC/amps use the Wolfson WM8740 like the Pico, but none of them use an ASRC chip to upsample 16/44.1 CD rips to 24/96. The Pico via USB rivals most portable DAC/amps that use optical, until you use native 24/96 files via optical - and even then the improvements with native 24/96 are subtle (but there). So, if you need more input options the iBasso D10 is one option. I have both and would not get rid of either DAC.

Pico dac with optical would destroy all and I would take it over anything, doubling as home and portable.

Previously Justin made it clear he wasn't going to do optical, but that was in regards to the Pico DAC/amp. Maybe he will reconsider.

I did remember another portable with optical, coax and USB - as per a previous users request - and that is the AMB Gamma 1 (y1). But the USB of y1 is not as good as the USB on the Pico, while the coax and optical were very nice; and I don't know if it uses a WM8740 DAC chip like the poster requested.
