Headamp Blue Hawaii Special Edition

Have fun with that!
When did you place the order for yours super_fied and when is it coming?

I placed mine in mid May 2010 and while there's no actual date given yet, the update on my BHSE being built and quick change in aesthetic options makes me confident this time.

My birthday's 2 weeks later, so i'm guessing that with the testing and such, it will be able to reach me by then.:D

building 4 right now.  this is the last of them until the parts for the batch of 45 are all here -- almost everything is here now.  those will be mostly assembled in a professional production facility, there is really no other way to get it done fast enough.

IMO this by far the most advanced headphone amp in terms of design and materials used. It's by no means an easy task to build a Blue Hawaii in the first place due to the voltages at hand and the massive amount of heat the amp gives off. This is a 200W+ space heater and Justin has gone to great lengths to make sure that it will last a long time by providing efficient ways to get rid of the heat. The tall cones are vital part of this since they allow cold air to reach the underside of the chassis to cool the tubes and the surrounding circuitry.

As for the choice of parts, many of these amps have the best volume attenuator money can buy, a 4-gang Alps RK50. The amp is fully DC coupled so no caps in the signal path to degrade the signal and the PSU caps are made by CDE and Panasonic, both excellent choices. RCA sockets are PCB mount Vampire units and the list goes on and on.

Pretty parts are just band-aids on a bullet wound if the circuit design isn't up to much. The Blue Hawaii and the Stax SRM-T2 stand IMHO head and shoulders above all else when it comes to circuit design and Justin has gone quite a bit further then Stax ever did with the T2. Such small design details as to make sure there is zero interference on the bias line and that there is no bias charge hiding inside the amp section when disconnected from the PSU shows just how far Justin has gone here.

For the record I have one of these on order even though I'm more then capable of building one for myself. The reason is simple, I owned one of the old KGBH units that Justin built and it worked flawlessly for years of heavy use and was beautifully made.

Hi spritzer,
l know nothing about how Audio equipment works but have the BHSE on order and  the reasons why l chose it were because, [1] IMO it's a very good looking amp [2] l have the Pico Slim so l can see Justin's build quality [3] from the reviews l've read it's regarded as one of the best sounding electrostatic headphone amps available and lastly your above comments, so on that note l'd like to thank you spritzer.

                                                                                      Dave.

P.S. When placing my order l opted for the Alps RK50.

So, you mean you are building 4 by yourself now - when all parts for the batch of 45 arrived you will send them off to PCBA company for wave soldering and stuff?

I do not solder the PCBs myself (havent for a while) and they are soldered by hand, not wave soldered.  I would estimate each one is 16 hours of assembly+testing+shipping after I have all of the PCBs soldered and panel connectors pre-wired.

Who will test this batch of 45?

I hope it turns out ok - has this contract manufacturer done any assembly and test work for you before?

They currently solder the circuit boards, assemble/solder the wires to the chassis connectors, and build the umbilical cable for the PSU/Amp.  This would just be taking it a step further and having them attach those boards/connectors to the enclosures and solder the wires from the connectors onto the circuit boards.  I would receive the completed units without covers installed and test from there.  They are local which is the way to go for this.

"It would be nice to hear the BHSE as well, but I don't plan to order it unless HeadAmp delivery times become more reasonable and predictable."

How else could this be accomplished?

If they do consistently good work, then it's a good way to scale. It's important to inspect and test before shipping - it's excellent that you'll be doing that. Will you be able to look at both sides of all circuit boards even if they are mounted in the chassis?

Justin,

Can you provide an approximate completion date for this last batch of 45 BHSE amps? It's understandable if you're hesitant to do so, given that Head-Fi'ers may get impatient, etc., if those estimates aren't met, but it would certainly be helpful in planning for that day.

For the same reasons, can you also provide an approximate completion date for the last four Aristaeus amps as well?

Thanks,
GRod

Anyone in the batch of 4 being produced now has heard back from Justin? I sent two emails asking if my amp would be done before a special occasion (as a request and update), but have not got any replies...

Just wondering.

Justin has replied. While it will not exactly be before that date, it will be around it, which makes me completely satisfied I guess.

Dear friend,
Could you share Justin's reply?

Please inform the progress of BHSE order status of mine.

I was intending to cancle this order last month but I'm still holding it because I trust your delivery schedule which is available within June.

I would like to know more detailed information and exact production schedule status. Thank you.
