Well, there is a thread

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=230318

on this: Tom's Hardware's 10 headphones for under $100:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/03/...r_100_dollars/

But Tom's list leaves a little to be desired, IMHO.

That got me to thinking, what would be a good head-fi 10 headphones for under $100? This could be really helpful to newbies, and, well, normal people (who think $100 for a pair of headphones is plenty to spend).

A few entries I think Tom missed:

Grado SR-60
Sony MDR-V6 / MDR-7506
Senn HD280
Senn HD555 ($100 on a good day)

These are all amazing values for under $100, IMHO, and for sound quality and accuracy pretty well smoke anything in Tom's list.

Any further thoughts? This might be a subject on which there is a lot more agreement than disagreement, even between warring factions of head-fi...

Just slipping under the limit, what say about the MS-1s?

I would take the HD280 off the list. Although I know some people really like it, it's generally not that popular around here and I personally don't think it's worth the money. Unless you absolutely need the isolation (with which it does a great job), there are better headphones for the same price or cheaper.

And what about earphones? V-Moda Vibes?

I LOVE the sound quality of the HD280s (which is a pretty subjective opinion, after all), but I must confess over the long haul the comfort has been a no-go for me. Also, although the isolation is good, you hear all kinds of breathing and rustling from your own cranium when you wear them. So I can see taking it off the list if we get 10 other strong candidates.

ksc75 as the underdog contender

And I have to stick a vote in for the HD280. Although I know it's far from being the king of the pile, it doesn't deserve the bad wrap it often gets.

Absolutely, belongs at the top of the list for bang-for-the-buck.
