Since I started reading these forums about 2months ago, I've spent almost $600 on audio-related items, translating to roughly a 600% increase in my spending in this area by this time last yr! (I am definitely enjoying it tho

How much have you spent since joining head-fi?

I think I joined in October, and I've accumulated:

Phones:
Senn HD580
AKG 501
Grado SR60
Sony V6
Koss Sportapro

Sources:
Cambridge D500SE
Sharp MD-MT90
a few sony d-25s
a broken sony d-25

Amps:
Berning MicroZOTL
JMT-built amp
Total Airhead
senn dsp 360

I'd prefer not to add it up.

Probably would have bought more, but I just bought a house. Goodnews is I'm cleaning out the garage! (and all the money I make on e-bay and swap-shop can go into my new hobby.

Lets revisit this question in 12 months

Oh to be ignorant again!

....but then, what would be the point in listening to music?

I spent most of my money at Headwize, before Head-fi existed. Including the DIY stuff, I've spent about $1500 since October 2000, when I first encountered Headwize. That $1500 has bought me my main system, my work system, my portable system, my TV/Movie system, and my gaming system. Not bad for the cost of one Headroom Max amplifier. And much less than I paid for a 266 MHz computer back in 1998.

In all I now have 7 headphones, 2 standalone CD players, 1 portable cd player, 1 commercial amp, 3 DIY amps, 3 commercial interconnect pairs, and 2 DIY interconnect pairs. I probably use headphones on average 3+ hours a day, so that comes to about $1 per hour of use so far, which will decrease as I use my current system, or increase it I buy more.

Not bad considering how little time I have to work at my job to make $1, and how much enjoyment the new equipment has given me.

What if you include cost of the music you've purchased for listening to with the new equipment purchased as a result of head-fi?

How much does that affect your $$$ spent total?

That's my strategy too. I just went to audition a cambridge D500SE, which I liked a whole lot, and saw a pair of Stax on a bottom shelf.

I had to keep telling myself "I don't want to hear those. I DON'T want to hear those. I want to hear those....."

There are purchases I've regretted and others I haven't. For me it's been most difficult settling on a source (not being able to hear anything prior to committing certainly hasn't helped). Of my used purchases, I've been mislead into thinking that equipment was in better condition than it actually was twice. If any of you ever need a go-between for an exchange of goods, I'm that person—one of the most anal-retentive about the condition of audio equipment you'll ever know.

My music intake hasn't increased appreciably since discovering my audio self.

Amp: Melos SHA-1 ($500)
Sources: Sony SCD-C333ES ($600), Perpetual Technologies P-3A ($480), AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 ($720)
Phones: Sennheiser HD-600 ($210), Alessandro-Grado MSP ($450)

So far I've bought the HP890 and I have three pairs of KSC-35 on the way from the US...

I'm looking into the HD83 DIY tube amp and the Cambridge D500SE as a source (will probably audition it in my home in a couple of weeks)...

The date I joined can be seen under my name to the left

Don't feel bad. I've spent over US$1K since getting (seriously) into headphones, and will soon be cresting US$2K (and there are others who are much worse).

I have two questions about the poll -- first, since I started at Headwize, should I count my purchases since I first joined Head-Fi or Headwize? Second, should I include total amount I've spent including items I've sold, or the net amount of money I've lost since getting into the hobby (e.g., if I had bought headphones and amp for $600 then sold the amp for $300, it would be $300 altogether)?

Anyway, this is my progression of purchases and sales (only some prices here):
1. Grado RS-2 ($300)
Marantz CD6000OSE ($400)
Headroom Cosmic (old version) ($539, I think)
DH Labs Silver Sonic BL-1 Series II (RCA-terminated, 1m) ($99)

2. Returned Cosmic, bought Wheatfield HA-1 ($549).

3. Bought the Alessandro-Grado Music Series Pro headphones ($420).

4. Sold Grado RS-2 ($330).

5. Bought JMT Altoid amp.

6. (August) I bought my modded Melos SHA-1.

7. Portable system, good for airplanes and security people:
Sony D-EJ01 ($220)
Ety ER-4S ($249)
Airbag ($39)
Porta-Corda ($150)

8. Sold Alessandro MSP.

9. Bought Sony MDR-V6.

10. Bought Sennheiser HD600.

Zheesh! That's long. Also forgot to include my Air Matrix interconnects ($100), but that's okay.
