Planar magnetic speakers consist of a flexible membrane with a voice coil printed or mounted on it. The current flowing through the coil interacts with the magnetic field of carefully placed magnets on either side of the diaphragm, causing the membrane to vibrate more or less uniformly and without much bending or wrinkling. The driving force covers a large percentage of the membrane surface and reduces resonance problems inherent in coil-driven flat diaphragms."

Does the above also describe the technology used in the headphones you are referring to?

Yes, they are planar magnetics.

Looking forward to reviews and a possible comparison to the Beyerdynamic T1 if you get both.

The velour earpads shown on head-direct.com look nice and comfy - much nicer than the foam pads shown a few posts up.

That should be possible, as I did also order the T1. Funny, I haven't bought a truly new pair of headphones in quite a while (I did get a balanced DT880, but I already had the unbalanced for years), and now within a month I buy two

Why didn't you keep the strawberry doughnuts then?

In my case I would love a pair of these, but I have to first get a more powerful amp for my K1000 (EHHA) and maybe an eXStata amp for my O2 Mk1.

They looked great, and sounded great, but were too heavy to wear comfortably for any length of time, unfortunately. Too much wood, in this case.

At least in general, planars have outstanding mids and highs. The worry is that they will have no bass. So the fact that these do is a really good sign.

My wallet's telling me the same thing especially after getting the JH13 last week.

If Fang tells me that I can get good results driving the HE5 with a speaker amp, then I'll be ordering one soon...
