Heya,

I'm considering picking up an HE-6.

Will a Little Dot MK III power it sufficiently?

EDIT: Update, will a LDMKIII power an HE-500?

LDMKIII Specs:

  1. SEPP (Single-Ended Push Pull) OTL in Class-A
  2. Frequency response: 12 hz~100 Khz (-1dB)
  3. THD+N: 0.15% (80 mW @300 ohm)
  4. Power Output:
  5. 350 mW @ 300/600 ohm
  6. 300 mW @ 120 oh
  7. 100 mW @ 32 ohm
  8. Variable Gain: 3,4,5, or 10x
  9. Recommended Load Impedance: 32 ohm~600 ohm
  10. Input Impedance: 50K ohms
  11. Pre-Amplifier Output Impedance: 600 ohms
  12. Pre-Amplifier Gain: 3-10x (also controlled via gain switches)
  13. Pre-Amplifier Voltage: 10V RMS
  14. Power Consumption: 30W (228V * 0.130A)
  15. Pre-Amplification circuit includes both driver and power tubes
  16. Driver Tubes: 2x 5654 (5725)
  17. Power Tubes: 2x 6H6PI (6H6n, 6H6nN)
  18. High quality aluminum chassis
  19. Dimensions (Metric): 270mm deep by 175mm wide by 123mm high
  20. Dimensions (English): 10.6 inches deep by 6.9 inches wide by 4.8 inches
  21. Weight: 3 Kg or 6.6 lbs

HE-6 Specs:

  1. Acoustic Seal: Open
  2. Sensitivity: 83.5 dB
  3. Warranty: 3 years
  4. Manufacturer Warranty: 3 years
  5. Headphone Type: Full Size
  6. Weight: 502 grams
  7. Impedance @ 1kHz: 50 Ohms
  8. Cord Length: 9ft
  9. Detachable Cable: Yes
  10. Cord Type: Straight Y
  11. Coupler Size: Large
  12. Ear Coupler Type: Full-Size
  13. Driver Type: Dynamic

I can't really tell off the specs alone. Looks like 50ohm impedance, and 83.5dB sensitivity. I think the LDMKIII could do it. But I'm not at all positive.

What do you guys think? Bust? Go for it?

Very best,

The HE6 is a fine example of an upper tier headphone. Personally I would rather use a vintage receiver from Marantz/Pioneer which even with a full recap will be less money. Again your mileage may vary and the best suggestion would be for you to audition the combo and decide if the sound is of your liking. Ideally you would have other gear to compare against to make such a call. If you are not in a hurry there is an strong possibility that a meet will be held in October in Florida, perhaps you could wait till then before making the decision.

Heya,

Would love to hear them in a meet. Likely won't be able to though, I work weekend nights and take classes in the day. If I knew of a meet in advance, I could get the time off, but I haven't seen any specific dates or anything, and Oct is close. So probably not going to happen. Tis too bad, I'd love to go and take all my gear too for people looking to try a lot of different options that are more affordable.

I'm confused about the receiver info. I already have the Little Dot MK III. Trying to find out if it would actually power the HE-6 or if it's under powered.

Very best,

About any headphone amp will be under powering the HE-6. A Beta 22 with x10 gain might be ok but most people are using speaker amps. I'm using a DAC>Passive Volume Control>2 x 125w (8 ohm) monoblocks>HE-6.

You're prolly the only one using monos.

Heya,

Gotcha, I think that seals it for me. No HE-6 for me then.

Do you guys think a Little Dot MK III will sufficiently power an HE-500?

Very best,

No. My CSP-2 OTL Decware could not power them properly they also need power. For your amp you should be looking high impedance cans not power thirsty orthos

Yes, it would depend on how loud you listen. The Graham Slee Solo SRGII at about 9 o'clock produces about 66-68 dB and at about Noon it produces about 82-85 dB. Both out of the HE500.

Your talking apples and oranges. The Graham amp is a SS amp and the Litle Dot is a OTL. No way that little dot will drive the HE500 properly. My Decware CSP-2 could not while my 6W Decware could. Even though the HE500 is more efficient it still needs power to be driven and I had them in for an extensive audiition.

I was putting a bit of context following the response in post #4.

i tried the he-6 with my beta-22(16X in balanced mode, 8X for each module) and i think that 22X(11X for each module) is better

Really the cheapest dedicated headphone amps that can power the HE-6 are the Schiit Lyr and the RSA SR-71B. Certainly that LD amp cannot even come close.

The cheapest way to power the HE-6, like Miguel said, would be a vintage amp or receiver. I use my HE-6 mainly from a restored Marantz 2275 receiver and it sounds great. That was $500, but I also bought a nice Optonica integrated amp from the early 80's that does a great job with the HE-6 as well, and I got that for $100!
