After comparing alot of headphones, I ordered the Shure SRH 1840. It was also alot better than the HD700 (unless you really like the sound character of the HD700 though ). And as an added bonus, it's a headphone that is not hard to drive. 
 
But somehow I have the feeling that I will regret not buying the HD800 with a nice DAC + Amp. 

 My biggest reason for not buying the HD800 was that I'm afraid I"m going to need to spend over $2000 to make them sound good after reading how hard they are to drive.

I've powered the HD800's quite successfully with a Matrix M-Stage, Audio GD NFB15, and a Magni/Modi combo. A lot of people (not all) just didn't like the signature of the 800's til they went tube but I honestly loved them just fine whether in a $200 wunderbox or a $1500 stack of Schiit.
 
You will like SRH1840. You will like them a lot. Better than HD700? I have no idea, it's a preference thing, but yes you are correct it can be plugged into a computer's speaker out half the time and be dandy.
 
800's are just dang expensive too and you take a huge hit when you go to sell.

I've had the HD700 for three months and just bought a HD800. I think the HD800 is very different from the HD700. 800 is kind of bright but 700 is quite dark. I prefer the HD800 with my QB9 > DNA sonett amp.

I use the HD700 with a Schiit Lyr and really enjoy the combo out of my AK120. I also do not find it as bright as the HD800.

Perhaps being a little dark is not HD700's biggest problem. The price is! It's overpriced at $1000 and it can't stand out even at it's price of $600 now.

I think the main problem with the HD800 is that its like a ferrari: you need the right tires, the right fuel, the right driver... it looks like you need to not only build a system around the HD800, but also listen to specific music (Classic, jazz, acoustic).
 
I love good quality music but I dont haev the time or money to get that much into it, and thats why I am slightly leaning towards the HD700, even if its not as refined as the HD800. (thou I still want to audition both for some time to make up my mind).

I'm using the non expensive NuForce DAC100 to drive the 800. I think it is really nice combo. The 800 sounds flat and very detailed. Maybe an expensive tube amp could be better for the 800s but with US$1000 DAC100 + 800s the 700s cannot compete for sure.

I prefer the HD700 over the HD800 in terms of every day use and listening.
 
While I appreciate the HD800 clarity, definition and openness, it is a  little too stale to me for everyday music/movies. But a great reference source to remember neutrality.
 
I think the HD700 has a "fun" factor to it without losing its key features. And paired up with a WA7 it keeps a smile on my face.
 
And at this moment, the HD700 is about AU$599. Totally worth $600 IMO.

650 sounds congested, yet comfortable and soothing. It's good in it's own right but I'm somewhat of a purist in my sonic preferences so I like the neutrality of 600 and 800.

You have a picture of the Shure SE846 as your profile pic so I am going to assume you have them. I owned both the HD700 and HD800 at one point. Playing both from an Objective 2 amp Plus ODAC. The HD700 do not look as good and are not made with as nice of materials. They have a slightly smaller soundstage but a warmer sound signature when compared to the HD800. In terms of comfort, both physically and mentally, the HD700 is also slightly more comfortable, with less listening fatigue and more comforatble earpads. If you want a headphone with a slightly more forgiving and playful nature with slightly more of a bass emphasis, go for the HD700. If you want clarity, soundstage, and a headphone that sounds different than what you already have, the shure se846, then get the HD800. Also, if you are wondering, both work well with glasses and are comfortable enough to wear for several hours. Let me know if you have any questions.

I bought the HD800 last year because it simply is the best headphone and it works well with the Chord Hugo that I use for my Shure SE846.

Just my 2 cents on this...
After trying them both, I found the hd800 to be remarkably better, if you are willing to spend 1000$ on headphones.

Isn't the HD800 like $1500? And the HD700 is only $500? I would go with HD700 all day.
