HD700 or HD800

Old thread, but this is the first time I've seen someone say they like the HD 700 more than the HD 800.  I firmly believe anyone who thinks this had an amp that didn't do the HD 800 justice though.  If someone were to run both on say the Apex HiFi Audio Pinnacle or Teton side by side, I think everyone would prefer the HD 800.

  Dude...

honesly have you even seen HD 700 in real life? Just for the reference, sennheiser HD 700 looks and feels extremely high-end! Photos on the internet does not make it a justice.

Yeah, I owned the HD 700 and was in love with the look and feel. (Not too crazy about the sound, though...)

Everything 600 and above are 300 ohm impedance. The 700's are more neutral, and balanced, where the 800's have killer highs and an amazing soundstage, I personally like the 700's more but it really comes down to what you like, if you like the 700's more, it would really pay to look at the 600's

Hi all,

I found this thread and I have a question for you guys who have listened to both headphones:

Presently I have an HD700 and in my country there’s a sale where the HD800 is at approx 820 brand new, sealed. Do you think is it worth the upgrade? I listen mostly to classical music and latin music. I know the HD800 needs a good amp and I wonder if a Schiit Magni 3, a Vali 2 or a Lyr2 will make it justice.

Thanks in advance for your opinion

None of those amps will do the HD 800 justice, but the HD 800 is without a doubt in the top 5 best headphones for classical music. For it to sound its best though, it really needs an outstanding amp, especially because its treble can sound really harsh and fatiguing on a lower end amp (but not more than the HD 700 probably).

Would you recommend against the possibility I currently have?. I really like how the HD700 sounds for classical out of the Magni 3 and the Lyr2 (although different amps, they are good for different subgenres of classical) and I was wondering if the HD800 would provide a good improvement

I've owned them both. They are different in various regards.
HD700 is more compact so it has a more natural fit, while HD800 is definitely on the very big side of things. Headband on HD700 is more padded.
HD700 is warmer and has slightly softer/darker upper treble. HD800 is lighter in the bass, with more present upper midrange and more extended treble response.
Timbre is slighly better on the HD800, more realistic and microdetail is also superior. It can sound a tad lean depending on your recordings and setup.

Both are easy to drive for your amps. Perfect matching is always a matter of preference.

HD800 didn't replace the HD700 for me, but I've found little point in owning the HD700 along with the superior Beyerdynamic T1 (which is also warmer than the HD800)
Time has passed and I've sold my silver HD800 and replaced with the newer and more tonally balanced HD800S.
