I asked Sennhesier USA this question:
I have heard that Sennheiser plans to release a new Headphone, sometime this year or next, the HD700. What information can you share with me about this new product?
Here was their response:
Hello -

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in Sennheiser. Although Sennheiser is always working on developing new products and exciting technologies, there is no plans for a future flagship headphone at this time. The so-called HD700, although quite legendary in the rumour mill, does not exist. The HD650 will continue to be the flagship headphone for Sennheiser.

If you need additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Is this conclusive on the subject or not?

If you called up Apple six months ago, they probably would have given you a similar response regarding the iPhone. I'm not trying to be a conspiracy theorist; it's quite possible that Sennheiser does intend to keep the HD 650 on top for a while longer, but companies in competitive markets are often very guarded about giving information upcoming products.

That's very interesting. The latest rumor came from somebody who knew somebody that works for sennheiser. So perhaps they are working on a new flagship headphone but publicly they have yet to announce it. It does seem odd that they would out right deny it however.

I just love these rumor mills.....yes, we should all believe what one headphone rep says

Although it is interesting to see how long it takes a large company to spread its anouncements. Other Senn reps have said that they're allowed to say the HD700 will come out the end of Jan 2008, and will have wood in it. So I'm waiting until at least July to see any official big anouncements about the HD700. Obviously Sennheiser will release it sometime: the nature of any product is that a manufacturer has to come out with a new and better version to keep sales up.

1. Why would Sennhesier tell you a HD700 was in the works before telling the media?
2. Even if they were building one, they wouldn't tell you because it would damage the sale of the 650s, people would certainly stop buying them if they found out.

Therefore if it does come out, we will likely hear about it first from the media, and very shortly after it will be available to purchase.

I wouldn't take the Sennhesier drones response as the final word.

Good point, that clearly would be poor marketting strategy

John Grado also said that he had no plans to have a new flagship since the RS-1 seemed to be "it" for him, shortly after the GS-1000 was announced.

It's conclusive in that there won't be a HD700. It will be under a different name, like the HD701.

Doesn't discredit his original statement. The RS1 may still be his flagship, despite the fact that the GS1K is priced higher.

Not according to their website:

GS1000 page:

Grado is pleased to announce the release of the GS1000, the new flagship of our headphone line.

Headphone Variations page:

Statement Series
A new level in headphone listening!

GS1000: Grado’s flagship headphone. Thought of by serious headphone users as the best headphone currently produced in the world.
