HD650 reviews in Diapason (France) and Stereo (Germany)

I've got that French mag "Diapason" with HD-650 review, but i didn't found it really usefull as they test the phones with a €200 Rega Ear

( A good small headphone amp, but it's a toy as for judging HD-650 capability)

That's not serious and that just show that those 'pro' reviewers, used to listen to speaker setup, don't have a clue about what some headphones can do today. ( Well also there's not so many high end headphone amp around ).

Veiled? I can't say they're veiled after hearing them stomp the orpheus when hooked up to a truly deserving headphone amp (the blockhead) with a truly outstanding source (Meridian 588). Some $500-per-cable cardas interconnects were used and of course the cardas xlr.

I listened to a bunch of audiophile label recordings (chesky, stereophile) and the headphone was revealing mic hiss, static, compression, distortion, transient popping, etc. Bad stuff even on the greatest recordings. I never heard this with HD600s.

These magazines have valid opinions but not when it comes to proper amplification of the HD650s; I believe that even my setup consisting of a maxed out home / rme 96/8 is sorely lacking for these headphones. Calling the HD650s veiled is like calling the london symphony's performance veiled, it's a comment which only bears meaning if you get stuck in bad circumstances (mid-grade amps/sources or back of the concert hall, respectively).

That's my take on it. If by "veiled" they meant "recessed high end" then that is definitely true. The HD650s being the highs down to where they are in a live performance which is something no other headphone to my ears does, creating for the first time an accurate tonal balance. Everything else is too detailed and too "intimate" to be real; even the HD600s.

But then again I could just be going mad

i paid 400 euros for them...
they are wonderful headphones, too bad i lack some money to give them a decent amp.

i really love them, the silk in the sound and the emotion they provide.
i haven't listened the HD600, but i don't feel any veil with the 650

maybe i have a problem with my vision but i though that i saw an auction for the hd650 on ebay selling for 230€ in mint condition.
acutally i was going to buy these and sell them again at ebay.uk and make some profit. but i guess it was too much work.

I bought my HD-650's by ordering them for 200 GPB from England to Australia. Was this a good price?

edit: postage was 25 GPB extra

Yes, the amp paired with the Senns would make a difference. Also, did they happen to mention how much break in time they gave with the 650's, given that the sonic characteristics move all over the place during this time, before finally settling down.
