it has been said that there is a certain amout of amplification needed to clearify the "veiled" midrange on the HD650. this i know to exist, as i did test other headphones at the SF meet and found the 650s a bit veiled. Can i get a list of amps that are/may-be capable of driving the Sennheisers to this performance point?
i'll add one i know works: gilmore balenced reference.

I don't know about single-ended amps but pretty much any balanced amp should eliminate any veil. I personally am in the "what veil?" camp.

The Raptor does a great job with the HD650, and then you can tuberoll to find the right sound for your tastes.

My MPX3 has no veil (as well as the other ones I've heard) or my Lavry for that matter. PPX3 SLAM probably as well...

I do believe that the PS Audio GCHA seems to reduce the "veil" phenomenon. I initially paired the Sennheiser HD650 with a number of amplifiers, but it wasnt until I tested the GCHA that I had discovered proper amplification for the headphone.

The Aria amp for me does help in removing this 'veil'.

However, with the limted range of equipment that I tried, I found the Equinox cable to be the biggest 'veil' remover.

FWIW alot also has to do with the source that you're using as well. You can haea great amp, but if you're pairing it with a lower level source you can still get that veil, atleast that's what I've experienced.

In my experience to date, the only thing which removes the veil is defoaming the suckers and replacing it with thin fabric. Amps can help, as can driving them balanced, but that only thins the veil and never fully removes it.

The s2A3 drove the 650's like I hadn't heard them driven before. A terrific match for the Senns IMO. The GCHA did a very nice job as well. Too bad they've both gone bye-bye.
