HD600s are the best!
Nov 6, 2009 at 10:43 PM Post #46 of 57
Right now the only headphones I own are the HD600 and the K601. Both are great all around cans that present music in different but pleasing ways. They should keep my ears happy for some time.

I might have to give the HD650 another chance, but I was not bowled over the first time I owned them.

The HD600's are fantastic cans.

Anyone who says otherwise has just become too jaded by the slippery slope of always looking for the next best thing and absolute perfection.

They were never my favorite, but they are fantastic cans.

I had 600's for years, sold them, and could never get rid of a little itch that wanted them back.

Got another pair and couldn't be happier.

They don't do anything wrong, and I just sit and enjoy music. With the more expensive Stax, it was always more "oh that sounds nice, excellent tone, check out that detail, etc.

The HD600.. I listen to Glenn Gould play the music, and enjoy it for what it is. I don't care to obsess over how clearly I can hear him humming along, or how cleverly the headphone portrays the hammer on the string. It just is.

Just enough detail/clarity to enjoy everything, but not abrasive or imposing in any way. Music just flows.

A clear winner for me.

My 2nd set of High end phones were the HD600, my first were the Sennheiser hd25sp. I got the HD600's Circa 99-00 and used them until 05-06 when I got the HD650's. I lisened to the HD-650's and was convinced they were better than the 600's. Durring this time frame I also tried the K701 and the RS-1 and GS-1 (Grados are not my thing). I recently upgraded the
HD650'S to HD800'S (I still have all 3 sets 600, 650 and 800). The 800's are in a different league from the 600 and 650. However after listening to the 800 for a few months I wanted to see what the 650's would sound like again...I couldn't listen for more than 2 minutes or so..way too dark and BOOMY. Then I tried the 600's....WOW pretty damn close to the 800's, far closer than the 650's. Now the 600 doesn't have the soundstage or the crazy detail of the 800's but they can hang. I will say the 800 is another beast alltogether but between the 600 and 650, there is no contest the 600 wins hands down.

It has to be said they are a great set of cans, I find myself using them more and more recently. For the performance they give they are a true bargain.

I also used to prefer the 650's but for some reason I now hear a veil that up until recently I did not. The 600's seem more open and lively. My 650's are the old variant. I would love to hear the newer 650's to see how they compare.

Currently Sugden Headmaster with HD600 and SAA Equinox cable = musical pleasure for me.
