I think it's more than just the openness and soundstage, though I would agree that they are no more similar than "reminiscent" implies. The hole-in-the-pad-mod is effective in toning down the bass and bringing the mids and highs out.

Also, GokieKS- My T-Rex analogy was meant to highlight the absurdity of the comparison, though your diagnosis would be difficult to rebut. :crazy/demented smile:

PtheD...Most of the aftermarket cables made for the 600 series, make a huge difference is sound improvement. They make a good headphone sound even better.
I don't want to turn this thread into a "cable difference" or "burn in" war, so let's not go that direction...it's just, that at all the meets I've gone to, almost everyone is in agreement, that there is a marked improvement in sound.
The headband and foam are different...I am not sure how many Newtons they are, but I have seen people with the 650's bending their bands out, to violent proportions, to accommodate larger heads, which we joke about, equates to "larger brains"

If you think about it, if you buy the Senns refurbed, and buy an aftermarket cable, which is commonly on sale in the "for sale" forums, you can have a stellar performer for about $300.

Or you can get the Senns refurbed and possibly get an HD650 stock cable for them (around $15?) and improve somewhat over the HD600 stock (at least that's the general consensus... I prefer the HD600 stock cable's airiness and soundstage over replacements I've heard, but I'm apparently in a small minority).

I'll tell you what. As soon as I have the money for them I will get both a replacement HD650 cord for my new HD600s as well as the Cardas replacement cable. They both sound like they are worth the money to, if not most, than at the very lest, many, people that purchase them.

Does anyone know how Sennheiser handles the warranty on thier refurbished headphones? Since Amazon is a authorized retailer, these might be accepted for the 5 year warranty, but I am wondering if they will be before I drop the money on them. Does anyone know?

Now I am curious about the refurb Amazon Senn 600s also.
How would the 600's be, coming from Audio Technica ATH-A900's?

I really like my A900's, but sometimes I wish for better clearer vocals
(I guess that is the recessed mids that some talk about that plagues the
A900's, and I don't want to MOD my A900's), I enjoy the Bass, Clear Highs,
and wide soundstage the A900s provide me with. How do the Senn 600's
differ? Are they Better???????????

I would be driving them with a SuperMacro v3.0 headphone amp.

rab10: Have you checked out the comparison between the ATH-A900 and HD600? It's a good review if you haven't read it already. I can't provide any direct comparisons between the two myself, but I think HD600 will certainly provide you with those clear vocals you are looking for, and I find the bass and highs of the HD600 to be quite enjoyable.

You've really done it now..

I swore back in 1976 that I'd never own another pair of Sennheiser 'phones (this was before they started dabbling in those newfangled electrostats), because as good as they were, they just wouldn't give up on this Big Peak In The Response At 2.5KHz obsession they had going at the time, and I jumped from Sennheiser's HD-424 to the Stax SR-X Mk 2 and only looked back once, about 5 years ago, to try a mid-range Senn a friend owns. Still the same peak! "That tears it!" I said to myself. "Never again!"

You have to remember that in 1976 there was no contest between even the best dynamic 'phone and the Stax. I learned one trick with the Stax that no other dynamic headphone I've tried since can successfully perform, and that's a simple crescendo test. I could crank the volume slowly up and up and up on the Stax (I had a Dyna 400 amp at the time) and they never boomed or screeched or whoomed but stayed perfectly clean and simply got louder and louder and louder.. and louder still. The analogous effect would be slipping down a smooth stretch of autobahn and idly glancing down at the speedo to note with smug satisfaction that the big shiny car you're driving is going 200 km/h with an utter lack of anything smacking of excitement or drama. No flutter, no rattles, no whoosh, none of the sensations normally associated with ungodly fast. I wasn't surprised when Stax and Daimler-Benz got together later in the decade.

Well, I've ordered the HD-600. Can it pass the "autobahn" test? We'll find out.

Besides, now that I've started babbling in other threads about planar-magnetic 'phones, I find that to put forth a comparison that makes sense in 2005 requires that I have a "modern" moving-coil 'phone. The Grado SR-80 (my best moving-coil to date) isn't the datum that the 600 and 650 are. So.

So off we go into the future. I guess.
