I had problems with my ears rubbing against the cloth material covering the driver before the phat pad mod. This made my ears kinda raw and the velour pads are a bit more itchy than the HD595 ones. On the other hand, the comfort on the HD595 is not perfect either. The HD595 when wore for a longer time made the top of my head sore (where the head band sat).

I currently have the HD497s and listen to a lot of vocal trance...but also soundtracks and rock to a lesser extent.

I wanted to spend less than $200...but might consider $250.

Not for everyone. The driver has a cloth covering so you can't really touch it. I find them supremely comfy. Maybe my ear does touch the cloth covering but I don't notice it and it doesn't seem to detract from comfort.

The only issue I have is that the pads get a wee bit itchy over time, but not unbearably so.

hmm .. i'm stalking threads on the AD900 because they left quite an impression on me when i heard them and they are presently the forerunners in my search for my 1st pair of full-size phones.

only managed to compare this with the MS-1. found the bass on the AD900faster and more refined than the MS-1; it's more airy than the MS-1 too.

um not quite. AD700 and AD900 are very close sounding - AD900 is just refined tad bit more, but almost unnoticeable IMO. I personally prefer AD700 over both HD555 and 595. AD700/900 were more fluid and just more musical. I just find HD555 and 595's midrange just little off for some reason.

What would be the most noticeable differences between the AD700 and AD900. Is there slightly more bass quantity/impact, slightly more forward mids, and smoother/less grainy highs?

I never throught highs were grainy...
I thought the most notible thing was overall smoothness of the cans, but still not enough to justify selling AD700 and move up to AD900. Or AD1000, for that matter. AD2K, on the other hand - completely justifies upgrading.

Ill be picking up a pair of the AD2000 as soon as I can afford them which will be in about 2 years when I get out of college. lol. Do the AD2000 still have a nice airy spacious sound to them like the AD700?

I would say soundstage isn't any bigger, but instrument separation and placement is much better. Airy, yes. but with that bass that gives you a short jab - which I find quite enjoyable. Mind you, AD2000s are VERY involving pair of cans, and there is almost no way to avoid tapping your toes and nodding your head. If you don't like that sort of listening, stay away and go hand around with K701s

If the HD595s and AD900s are two of the best values out there, why not more comparisons?

Probably because people buy either the AD700/HD555 as entry level headphones or jump all the way to the top AD2000/HD650.

Would you say the soundstage is the same or smaller? I could sacrifice a little soundstage for some VERY involving cans though.
