Hey guys, I am currently using some HD485's.. and XD400's... I like the sound of the senns a bit more.. so I decided to go from there...

I was gonna get a portable player.. but decided I rather put that towards some cans instead...

Anyways what would be a good upgrade? I have in mind the HD580's. Would these sound similar to the HD485's but better? (well DUH) with the same sound signature I mean. I know the HD580's would have less but better bass.

BTW, dont worry about the amping, I'll grab one later.

AND I also wanted some Grados cans too, but decided against this, and besides.... 131 shipped is kinda hard to pass up on the 580's

HD580 is the way I upgraded from HD485.
Definitely recommend.

Nice.. thank you guys.. I am defintely looking for something thta bass goes deeper and has more clarity...and I dont leave my HD485's bass at stock either.. I lower it.. quite a bit... So this should be perfect...

GRR I kinda want the HD595's now that they should run better ampless... but it cost so much more than the 580's

Since you intend to get an amp anyway at some point, go for the 580s. (Your Audigy should do a decent job driving them, but a source upgrade would be recommended in the long run.) If you should no longer be satisfied with their performance, you could still get HD600 grilles at some point, followed by an upgrade cable if that's not enough. (An amp would come before the latter, however.)

I doubt you'll find satisfaction in the HD580s bass. It really does lack extension, but it is pretty well defined, especially with a beefy amp. The 650 cable helped somewhat, but not enough. Maybe the HD650s might live up to the task.

yah well.. I wanna get used to the "natural" way things sounds.... I can live with a lack of pounding bass...

BUT since you said that.. what DO you recommend in the same pricerange.. I mean 130 bucks shipped new for a hd580 is really good... and I want a Senn that is higher end than my HD485's. And I love the Senn signature too. And besides I was considering some grados too.. but decided I rather stick with the richer sound and warmer of some HD580's...

AND.. HD580's does have more bass than grados right

You know... that price is so good I can't think of any alternatives which would equal it in raw sound quality.

Hard to say about the bass vs. grados. I have the SR125, which I haven't used in a long time. They don't extend very low, but have a tight and fast bass response. I guess you can say the HD580s have more bass in comparison, though I'm not sure how they'll sound unamped.

By no means are the HD580s a bad purchase, but I know I couldn't live forever with their slightly lacking lower end. That's why I have a pair of HD595s as of today.

O, and BTW, how well does the HD580's respond to EQ'ing?

will changing the grilles of the 580 to those of the 600 actually improve the sound? i got the impression that this was purely for asthetic reasons.

In fact this should be the main reason for the sonic differences between HD580 and HD600. The more open nature of the metal mesh grilles reduces reflections (and resonances accordingly), thus the remarks about less closed-in, deader-between-the-notes sound.
