with foam. without, highs are shrill and sound is smeared.

I use them as is because they're just perfect this way.
I use them defoamed but I cut a thinner cover for the drivers from pantyhose.

One bad thing I have noticed is that the bass sometimes sounds a little, what should I say, uncontrolled, when I aint using the foam.
Has anyone noticed this?

Foam still in. I believe it's there for a reason.

I put the foam back in. I missed the smooth, organic sound to much. I use my dt990, ksc75 when I want a more forward treble detailed sound.
The REASON for why senn put them in, is to me to make the sound more smooth, and give them more authoraty, but if hd650 was my only headphone I guess I would use them both with and without foam from time to time.

The foam is there to reduce reflections between your ear and the headphone. That being said, I couldn't tell the difference when I took the foam out, so I put it back in and left it.

foam in. the warm, laid back sound is part of the beauty of the 650s.

You will hear the difference if you listen to music with a lot of guitars and treble. The first thing that goes away in sound whan damped is the higher frequenzies. The difference is not subtle, just listen for a while.

This is why I put it back in, no reason to try to remake 650 into someting it is not so good at. If I get tierd of my 990 I put on the 650 to heal my eardrums.

Whoops, I voted yes because I thought the quesiton was with or without foam. Yeah I leave it in. This is one of those mods I'm generally intensely skeptical of.

The HD650 has no lack of higher frequencies, foam or no. I can clearly hear a 20kHz tone even with the foam in, and string instrument overtones are rendered brilliantly.
