One reads complaints on the Internet about the cables of the HD600, HD650. The cables seem to be defective quickly and you then have to replace them. Replacement cables also seem to be quite expensive. Are these rare individual cases or does this actually happen often?

The cables are not defective and I have never seen any complaint about reliability. In fact, the stock cables are cheap and the 650 cable is a known 1st upgrade for the 600.
I would guess you would never have problems with a stock Sennheiser cable.

I just ordered two cables for my HD 650 from SennheiserUSA. They were $10.88 ea, which I wouldn't classify as 'expensive'. They work fine.

More like individual cases of people running over them. I don't use mine at my computer desk and never had a problem for five years, I just misplaced them when I transported my system to a meet.

The aftermarket cable I got has a contact issue between its 3.5mm plug and 6.3mm adapter now...after five years.

Thanks guys. I can't decide between the HD600 and the ATH-R70x. Sound-wise, I would prefer the R70x, but the supply of ear pads, for example, is terrible at Audio Technika. The build quality would be an argument more in favor of the HD600.

You should get the one that sounds to your preference. But the HD 600 is a classic and it is hard to be for many times the price. I guess you can get aftermarket pads for the ATs without too much trouble (dekoni, etc.)
