HD 25-1 II vs SRH840

The Shures are more balanced compared to the HD25 I II, but still hit deep when needed. Clarity and soundstage are wonderful for this closed can.

Yes. And pitch accuracy of notes, instrument separation (if you like that), overall clarity and control, balance as Palpatine said, better extension in both ends. The HD-25s are a tad more forgiving with different material, though the Shure's are way more versatile with different genres. Best in this regard I've heard so far in any can below 200 euros.
Oh, the HD25-1s are more portable and robust though.

Portability is one of the major factors with the HD-25's. I find them robust as a tank and very good for most forms of music, as well. The Shures are more detailed, but overall, I find the Senn's a more useful, versatile can for everyday use.

If portability is a major factor, get the HD-25s.

But if you plan to use it on at home, or at work at a desk, etc. Shure 840s all the way.

I traded my HD-25's for the 840s and never looked back. Soundstage, bass, and clarity all go to the Shures.

I agree! If it's portability you want, get the HD-25s! I just got my SRH840 today and although they are foldable, they are way too huge (IMHO) to be lugged around for portable use!

Moreover, they can get somewhat "hot" under the ear-cups while outdoors or on the move! Great overall performance for the price!

I don't really get why the srh 840 is looked upon like a portable headphone.

I use them as portables

... But the general consensus is that they indeed are NOT portables, or looked upon as such, as you state. Quite the contrary...

Closed studio headphones.

They can be used as portables because they collapse so that they can be carried around...thus exhibiting portability. Of course they are full sized cans so they are big...even when collapsed.

While they can be used as portable headphones, lot of factors make it very impractical, such as their big size, heavy weight, the coiled cable, etc. They're transportable-friendly (due to their ruggedness and foldability) but not purely portable IMO.

I haven't listened to the 840s, but I'm guessing they sound better, but it's an unfair comparison that the HD25s are destined to lose. The HD25s are a pair of portable, indestructible, and noise isolation headphones, while the 840 were designed for home listening. Convention dictates that the one built around being portable is going to have to come at some compromises.

So think to yourself, and this is important, where are you going to be doing the majority of your listening?
